Ubisoft Toronto is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Lighting Artist to join our team in Toronto, ON, Canada. This is a full-time, 6-month fixed-term contract opportunity with a Hybrid work model, offering flexibility while collaborating closely with the team.

As a Lighting Artist, you will be pivotal in shaping the game’s atmosphere, guiding player attention, and enhancing the overall visual experience for our memorable gaming titles.


What You’ll Do

You will be responsible for designing and implementing high-quality lighting that masterfully balances artistic direction, narrative goals, gameplay needs, and technical constraints:

  • Design & Implementation: Design and implement high-quality lighting setups for both in-game environments and cinematics.
  • Artistic Vision: Define moods and atmospheres through meticulous light placement and effects, working closely with the Artistic Director to align with the project’s creative vision.
  • Technical Collaboration: Collaborate with the Graphic Technical Director and programmers to develop essential lighting-specific tools and features.
  • Gameplay Integration: Create lighting systems that not only enhance atmosphere but also effectively support core gameplay mechanics and highlight the work of other art teams.
  • Quality Assurance: Validate lighting quality with artistic and technical leads, iteratively refining the work based on in-game testing and feedback.
  • Optimization: Resolve lighting bugs reported by testers and optimize lighting effects to meet artistic goals while strictly adhering to engine performance limits.
  • Documentation: Review game design and artistic direction documents to fully understand lighting challenges and goals.
  • Liaison: Serve as a point of contact for external teams and outsourcing partners on technical lighting topics.

Artistic & VisualsStrong artistic understanding of lighting, colour, and image composition.
Technical SkillsExperience with both real-time and pre-rendered lighting techniques.
Filmic KnowledgeFamiliarity with cinematic, filmic, and colour grading techniques, and a knowledge of photography principles.
Related SkillsSkills in shading, textures, special effects, image processing, or other related fields.
Workflow & Soft SkillsUnderstanding of game production workflows and collaboration within cross-functional teams. Initiative, resourcefulness, adaptability, and sharp attention to detail with creative problem-solving abilities.
