The Studio: Engineering Emotion

Stellar Entertainment is a premier AAA developer with a global footprint, maintaining high-energy studios in both Guildford, UK, and Utrecht, Netherlands. We operate within the world’s most dense clusters of game development talent, but our focus remains singularly on the player. We believe that a truly Great Game is a delicate equilibrium of mechanics, aesthetics, and emotional resonance.

As we embark on a brand-new, unannounced AAA project, we are looking to redefine what is possible in the real-time space. This isn’t just about making assets; it’s about building the systems that allow creativity to flourish. We are looking for a Technical Artist who thrives at the intersection of imagination and logic.

The Role: The Bridge Between Vision and Execution

As a Technical Artist at Stellar Entertainment, you serve as the critical conduit between the Art and Engineering departments. You are the “translator” who ensures that our Art Director’s most ambitious visual concepts can be realized within the technical constraints of modern hardware.

Your mission is to unlock the creative potential of our entire art team. You will do this by identifying bottlenecks in production, automating repetitive tasks, and architecting workflows that allow our artists to build world-class content with maximum efficiency and minimum friction.

Core Responsibilities & Daily Impact

1. Workflow Innovation & Automation

  • Pipeline Development: Design, implement, and maintain asset creation workflows that empower artists to iterate quickly.
  • Scripting & Tooling: Utilize Python, MEL, or C++ to create custom tools within Maya or 3DS Max that automate tedious tasks, ensuring the team stays focused on high-value creative work.
  • Engine Integration: Work deeply within Unreal Engine to ensure assets are imported, managed, and rendered correctly according to our project-specific standards.

2. Technical Problem Solving

  • Issue Resolution: Act as the first line of defense for artists facing technical hurdles. You will creatively solve complex problems that require a deep understanding of both the art pipeline and the game engine.
  • System Reliability: Ensure the high quality and reliability of game systems, maintaining a clean and bug-free environment for the creative teams.
  • Feature Delivery: Collaborate across multiple departments—including Animation, Environment Art, and Graphics Engineering—to deliver key gameplay and visual features.

3. Optimization & Performance

  • Asset Scalability: Take ownership of optimizing game assets (geometry, textures, shaders) to ensure the project meets strict performance and memory targets across all platforms.
  • Rendering Excellence: Maintain a strong understanding of shaders, lighting, and modern rendering techniques. You will help implement cutting-edge methods that keep our studio at the forefront of the industry.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and “know-how” to the art teams, fostering a culture of technical literacy and continuous learning.

Candidate Requirements

Professional Profile

  • Industry Veteran: Proven experience as a Technical Artist with at least one (ideally more) shipped AAA titles under your belt.
  • The Portfolio: A strong portfolio that demonstrates not just final visuals, but the workflows and technical solutions you created to achieve them. We want to see the “how” as much as the “what.”
  • Engine Proficiency: Demonstrable mastery of Unreal Engine, alongside expert-level knowledge of Maya or 3DS Max.

Technical Skills

  • Scripting Mastery: Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, C++, or MEL is essential for improving workflows and building custom tools.
  • Visual Tech: A deep understanding of modern shading (HLSL/PBR), lighting, and rendering techniques. You should have a natural curiosity for leading-edge methods used by top-tier global studios.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Excellent interpersonal skills. You must be able to explain technical concepts to artists and artistic requirements to engineers with ease.

Bonus Points

  • Advanced Coding: Professional-level C++ skills are highly beneficial and will significantly expand your impact within our technical stack.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Experience with procedural content generation (Houdini) or advanced rigging systems is a plus.

The Technical Artist’s Path at Stellar

In many studios, Technical Art is a support role. At Stellar Entertainment, it is a leadership pillar. Because we are building a new unannounced AAA project, you have the unique opportunity to define the pipeline from its infancy. You won’t just be “fixing” a broken workflow; you will be the architect of a new one.

If you are a problem-solver who loves “breaking” things just to build them back better, and if you have a passion for creating visually stunning experiences that run flawlessly at 60fps, we want to hear from you.

How to Apply

Please submit your application including:

1. Technical CV: Highlighting your shipped titles and technical stack.
2. Portfolio Link: Showing toolsets, shaders, or breakdown of technical art solutions.
3. Cover Letter: (Optional) Tell us about the most difficult technical challenge you’ve solved in a production environment.

Stellar Entertainment is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all.
