In this critical leadership role, you will act as the strategic partner to our Director, translating high-level directorial vision into a practical, highly functioning 3D framework. Your job goes beyond establishing the visual and cinematic language of the series; you are responsible for ensuring your department is equipped with optimized workflows, clear guidance, and the structural support required to execute complex storytelling goals.

As the supervisor, you will head a massive creative effort—making definitive choices regarding framing, camera movement, and character blocking—while systematically removing roadblocks so your Leads and Artists can perform at their highest potential. Scope of Work & Key Responsibilities

As the Previs/Layout Supervisor, your leadership will define the technical accuracy and cinematic brilliance of the series. Your primary responsibilities span three core domains:

1. Cinematography, Staging & Vision

  • Director Partnership: Guide the creation of proxy environments and drive collaborative virtual set-scout sessions alongside the Director.
  • Narrative Translation: Oversee the translation of 2D storyboards into a 3D environment, ensuring that character staging, blocking, and camera composition both creatively and practically serve the narrative text.
  • Shot List Management: Adhere closely to the Director’s shot list, while proactively collaborating to formulate elegant technical solutions whenever deviations or creative adjustments become necessary.

2. Department Leadership & Culture

  • Resource Allocation: Strategically plan, schedule, and assign sequence-level work packages across your entire artistic team.
  • Team Development: Lead, mentor, and manage Camera and Staging Leads and artists, fostering an environment that prioritizes an ego-free, collaborative team dynamic.
  • Empathetic Management: Act as a supportive, highly approachable leader. Keep departmental communication clear, transparent, and solution-focused to protect team morale and respect during high-pressure delivery weeks.
  • Pragmatic Advocacy: Serve as a realistic voice in production meetings, balancing the creative ambitions of directorial teams with the practical boundaries of schedule, technical pipeline limitations, and budget.

3. Cross-Department Strategy & Pipeline Integration

  • Interdepartmental Workflows: Partner closely with the Animation Supervisor, Pipeline Supervisor, and Editorial team to establish and refine layout workflows, ensuring flawless asset and data transitions between departments.
  • Bottleneck Prevention: Proactively identify, isolate, and resolve structural, layout, or staging challenges before they reach the active production floor.
  • Review Management: Drive the review and approval pipeline inside Flow Production Tracking (formerly ShotGrid), ensuring that supervisor feedback is actionable, clear, and effectively distributed to the team.

Position Requirements

Candidates will be evaluated on their technical infrastructure knowledge, elite cinematic eye, and ability to manage large creative teams.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Production Experience: A minimum of 7–10+ years of professional production experience within Previs, Layout, or Camera pipelines, featuring a proven track record as a Supervisor or Senior Lead on a CG series or feature film.
  • Artistic Mastery: Expert-level command over the principles of cinematography (including advanced framing, lens kits, depth of field, and camera language), editing workflows, and character animation/posing.
  • Core Software & Pipeline Literacy: Extensive, hands-on experience within a production Autodesk Maya pipeline, paired with a comprehensive understanding of how layout choices and data formats affect downstream departments.
  • Leadership Ethos: A leadership style grounded in empathy, transparency, and practical problem-solving. You focus on protecting your crew from unnecessary production chaos while actively championing their success.
  • Tracking Mastery: Deep, specialized experience utilizing Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid) to manage high-level reviews, assets, tasks, and project tracking.
  • Legal Eligibility: Applicants must be legally eligible to work in British Columbia, Canada, at the time of application.

  • Working experience with professional editing, post-production, or digital design software, such as Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and/or Adobe Photoshop.
