About Digital Domain
Digital Domain is an Academy Award-winning global visual effects powerhouse that has spent over three decades pushing the absolute limits of cinematic innovation. From groundbreaking live-action blockbusters to massive episodic series, our studio sits at the intersection of technology and art.
Our Previsualization division is the foundational engine of our creative process, mapping out complex cinematic sequences before cameras ever roll. As our Vancouver studio scales up for an incredibly exciting slate of upcoming shows, we are looking for a hybrid talent who can step into our workflow as a core Previz Artist while designing the toolsets that power the entire layout ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities as Mid to Senior Previz Artist / Pipeline TD
In this role, you will directly influence the creative speed and technical agility of our previsualization pipeline:
1. Tool Development & Workflow Optimization for Previz Artists
- Previz Pipeline Evolution: Design, write, test, and maintain robust pipeline tools, custom scripts, and workflows tailored specifically to the high-speed requirements of a modern Previz Artist.
- DCC Integration: Support and extend smooth software integrations between core layout tools (such as Maya, Unreal Engine, or MotionBuilder) and internal studio tracking systems.
- Process Automation: Identify inefficiencies in asset translation or staging workflows, building automated solutions that remove friction and maximize the productivity of every Previz Artist on the team.
2. Technical Support & Layout Collaboration
- Artist Technical Support: Act as the primary technical point of contact for the previsualization department, troubleshooting unexpected software crashes, rig limitations, or scene file corruption.
- Cross-Department Synergy: Partner closely with Core Pipeline leads, Production Managers, and the layout crew to gather tool requirements and translate the creative needs of a Previz Artist into clean, scalable code.
- Documentation: Maintain clear, concise user documentation for newly authored tools to ensure smooth onboarding for incoming layout talent.
Requirements & Qualifications
We are looking for an adaptable, code-savvy individual who deeply understands the daily production realities of a Previz Artist:
Core Technical Profile
- VFX/Animation Infrastructure Experience: Proven experience supporting or working directly as a Previz Artist, Layout TD, or Pipeline TD within a high-end VFX, feature animation, or game studio setup.
- Programming Mastery: High proficiency in Python is mandatory. Experience with PySide/PyQt UI development is highly valued.
- DCC API Familiarity: Solid working knowledge of internal APIs for major industry tools—specifically Autodesk Maya (Maya Python API/cmds), and familiarity with Unreal Engine or MotionBuilder previsualization pipelines is highly desirable.
- Production Systems: Experience integrating layout tools with asset management and production tracking software like ShotGrid (Shotgun).
Location & Eligibility Mandates
- Regional Restriction: This role is open strictly to candidates working remotely from British Columbia, Canada. Due to regional tax credit allocations, we cannot accept applicants residing outside of BC for this contract.
- Legal Work Status: You must have the existing legal right to work in Canada at the time of application (Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or holder of an active Open Work Permit).
