Key Roles & Responsibilities
As a Senior Special FX Artist at Digital Domain Hyderabad, you will be responsible for creating sophisticated, photorealistic simulations that anchor the narrative and visual design of global feature films. You will work under the guidance of the FX Lead, FX Supervisor, and VFX Supervisor to develop natural phenomena, destruction sequences, and magical designs.
1. High-End Simulation Creation
- Design and animate complex, photorealistic procedural effects, including rigid body dynamics (RBD), particle simulations, pyro vectors (fire, smoke, explosions), large-scale fluids (water, waves, splashes), and soft body/cloth elements.
- Produce look-development variants and look-tests based on real-world reference imagery, physics data, and concept art provided by the client or directors.
- Generate procedural geometry systems and environments that integrate seamlessly with assets built by our Modeling, Layout, and Animation departments.
2. Pipeline Integration & Performance Optimization
- Deliver highly optimized, clean caches and clean geometry networks that compile within strict production memory footprints.
- Work closely with Lighting Artists and Compositors to ensure your output layers contain the necessary data, shaders, light interactions, and utility passes for seamless integration.
- Help troubleshoot, debug, and optimize complex setup networks to ensure fast, efficient distributed rendering across local and cloud-based farm configurations.
3. Mentorship & Technical Leadership
- Provide guidance, technical support, and structural mentorship to Junior and Mid-level FX artists in the Hyderabad studio.
- Construct reusable, modular Houdini digital assets (HDAs) and pipeline tools to improve the productivity of the broader local FX team.
- Participate actively in technical and creative feedback sessions (dailies) to push the artistic envelope of the studio.
Technical Skills & Qualifications
Required Technical Profile
- Software Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of SideFX Houdini is required. Deep understanding of VEX, SOPs, DOPs, POPs, FLIP, Pyro, and Axiom solvers.
- Natural Physics Understanding: Strong intuitive understanding of real-world physical dynamics, fluid mechanics, velocity, timing, weight, and natural scale.
- Rendering Core: Advanced proficiency in rendering systems native to FX workflows, notably Karma, Mantra, Arnold, or V-Ray, including custom shader attributes.
- Compositing Basics: Functional knowledge of Foundry Nuke to slap-comp your own elements and review visual continuity before submitting work to supervisors.
- Portfolio Requirement: A highly polished, professional VFX showreel demonstrating production-level work, simulation breakdowns, and a keen eye for photorealism.
Preferred (Plus) Attributes
- Experience scripting inside Houdini using Python or HScript to automate internal generation tools.
- Familiarity with Unix/Linux-based operating systems, which form the spine of Digital Domain’s global rendering architecture.
- Prior exposure to real-time simulation logic or implementation inside Unreal Engine.
