The Vision: Why This Role Matters

In the world of March of Giants, players need to process information quickly without losing their sense of immersion. The Senior UI Artist acts as the architect of this clarity. This role requires more than just “making things look pretty”—it requires a deep understanding of human psychology, visual hierarchy, and technical constraints.

You will work at the intersection of art and technology. Your goal is to create a visual language that feels native to the game’s world while maintaining the highest standards of readability and usability. Whether you are designing a sleek futuristic store or a rugged, tactile inventory system, you will ensure that the player always knows exactly what to do and where to go next.

Core Responsibilities: What You’ll Do

1. Visual Design & Artistic Ownership

You won’t just follow a style guide; you will help evolve it. As a Senior member of the team, you will take ownership of complex, cross-functional interface systems.

  • Component Creation: Design and execute high-fidelity layouts, scalable iconography, and bespoke UI assets.
  • HUD & Menu Systems: Create immersive Heads-Up Displays that provide critical info during gameplay without cluttering the screen.
  • Live Operations: Support the “Games as a Service” model by designing seasonal content, limited-time events, and evolving store interfaces that keep the experience fresh for years.

2. Motion Design & Visual Feedback

Static designs are only half the story. In modern AAA gaming, motion is communication.

  • Functional Animation: You will create UI animations that provide “juice” and feedback—letting the player know a button has been pressed, a level has been gained, or a reward has been unlocked.
  • Pacing & Readability: Ensure that animations don’t just look good but serve a purpose, guiding the player’s eye and maintaining the rhythm of the gameplay experience.

3. Cross-Functional Collaboration

The UI team is the hub of the production wheel. You will spend your day collaborating with various experts to ensure a holistic player experience:

  • UX Teams: Turning wireframes and user-flow charts into stunning visual realities.
  • UI Technology & Programming: Working with technical artists and coders to ensure your designs are optimized and function perfectly within the game engine.
  • Game Design: Ensuring that the UI accurately represents the mechanics and systems intended by the designers.
  • Localization: Designing flexible layouts that can accommodate multiple languages and cultural nuances without breaking the visual integrity.

4. Technical Implementation & Optimization

A Senior Artist at Ubisoft understands that “done” means “working in the build.”

  • Engine Integration: Using game engines (such as Unreal Engine or proprietary tools) to implement and test UI elements.
  • Debugging & Polish: Identifying visual bugs, optimizing texture memory, and ensuring that the UI performs smoothly across all platforms.
  • Iterative Design: Proactively seeking feedback from playtests and team reviews to refine the user journey.

Qualifications: What You Bring to the Team

We are looking for an artist who has survived the trenches of AAA development and has the portfolio to prove it.

  • Industry Expertise: You have a proven track record of shipping successful video game titles, specifically within a UI/Visual Design capacity.
  • Design Mastery: Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects). Experience with prototyping tools like Figma or Adobe XD is highly valued.
  • Foundational Knowledge: A rock-solid understanding of color theory, typography, information architecture, and usability principles. You know how to use “white space” as effectively as you use a brush.
  • Technical Savvy: Comfort working within game engines and an understanding of the technical limitations of real-time rendering.
  • Solution-Oriented Mindset: When a design doesn’t work in-engine, you don’t just complain—you find a creative workaround.
  • Communication Skills: You can clearly articulate your design decisions to stakeholders and take constructive criticism with a growth mindset.

Life at Ubisoft Montreal

How to Apply

Your portfolio is your voice. We want to see how you think, not just how you draw.

Please submit:

  1. A Tailored CV: Highlighting your experience with UI systems in a gaming context.
  2. A Digital Portfolio: Showcasing your UI work. We are particularly interested in seeing “before and after” examples, motion studies, and iconography sets.
