Company Overview: The Rebellion Legacy
Rebellion is one of Europe’s largest independent game developers. Our independence is our greatest strength; it allows us to pursue creative risks and maintain total control over our intellectual properties. Whether we are building the next entry in the Sniper Elite series or launching a fresh, innovative title like Atomfall, our focus remains on high-quality gameplay and technical brilliance.
Our proprietary engine, Asura, is the heartbeat of our technical prowess. It allows us to tailor our tools specifically to the needs of our artists, ensuring that our games look and play unlike anything else on the market. Joining our VFX team means you will be working at the cutting edge of real-time effects, supported by a studio that values longevity, stability, and artistic freedom.
The Role: VFX Artist
As a VFX Artist, you will be integrated into a passionate team of specialists responsible for the entire visual effect spectrum. In our pipeline, VFX isn’t limited to just particles. Your work will encompass:
- Real-time Particle Systems: Explosions, fire, smoke, and environmental effects.
- Screen Post-Effects: Color grading, bloom, and lens-based visual cues.
- Material and Shader Effects: Dynamic surfaces and magical/technical textures.
- Mesh Destruction: Bringing environments to life through physics-based chaos.
- UI Effects: Enhancing the player’s interface with intuitive visual feedback.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily workflow will involve a blend of creative design and technical optimization.
1. High-Quality Effect Design
- Particle Crafting: Design and implement high-quality real-time particle effects that significantly elevate the visual “feel” of the game.
- Atmospheric Immersion: Use a variety of assets to create rich, atmospheric worlds, from dust motes in a sunbeam to the violent aftermath of a tactical strike.
- Narrative Support: Ensure all effects support the project’s narrative vision and environmental storytelling goals.
2. Technical Refinement & Optimization
- Asura Integration: Work directly within our proprietary engine to implement effects, ensuring they function correctly across all target platforms.
- Performance Monitoring: Conduct regular refinements to ensure that visual polish does not come at the cost of frame rate.
- Documentation: Create and maintain technical documentation for the effects you build, allowing for better collaboration across the tech team.
3. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
- Design Alignment: Draw upon Game Design Documents (GDD) to understand the mechanical objectives of an effect, ensuring player guidance is clear.
- Artistic Synergy: Collaborate with Environment Artists and Lighting Artists to ensure VFX blend seamlessly into the world.
Required Skills & Experience
We are looking for an artist who possesses a balance of “artistic flair” and “technical grit.”
Experience Requirements
| Level | Criteria |
| Portfolio | Accomplished real-time VFX portfolio demonstrating timing and clarity. |
| Studio Experience | Previous professional roles, internships, or high-level personal projects (Mods/Jams). |
| Technical Know-how | Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Perforce or Git). |
Technical Proficiencies
- Industry Standards: Mastery of Blender, Photoshop, and Substance.
- Simulation Tools: Experience with Houdini or Embergen for creating high-fidelity flipbook assets and simulations.
- 2D Techniques: Strong knowledge of 2D particle texture techniques and how to optimize them for real-time engines.
- Texture Workflows: Ability to author custom textures and shaders for specific VFX needs.
Employee Benefits & Perks
Rebellion is a “people-first” studio. We provide an extensive benefits package to ensure our team is supported both professionally and personally.

| Wellbeing | Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for mental health. |
| Discounts | Wide range of retail discounts and social event freebies. |
Work Culture and Environment
At Rebellion, we pride ourselves on an open, friendly, and creative atmosphere. We are “Big Indie”—large enough to work on massive AAA titles, but small enough that every voice is heard.
- Studio Locations: You have the choice to work from our riverside HQ in Oxford, or our vibrant studios in Warwick or Runcorn.
- Collaboration: While we offer hybrid options, we believe in the power of face-to-face brainstorming and encourage studio-based interaction.
- Inclusion: We are actively building a diverse team. We believe that a representative team makes better products and encourages innovation from all demographics.
Career Growth Opportunities
Joining the VFX team at Rebellion is not just a job; it’s a career path.
- Internal Promotion: We prioritize promoting from within, moving talented artists into Senior and Lead positions.
- Technical Training: Gain mastery over a proprietary engine (Asura) that offers unique challenges and learning opportunities not found in commercial engines.
- Mentorship: Work alongside industry veterans who have decades of experience in the shooter and action-adventure genres.
Why Candidates Should Apply
- Independent Freedom: Work without the constraints of a major external publisher.
- Diverse Portfolio: Contribute to games, film, and comics within a single organization.
- Stable Environment: 30 years of history means financial stability and long-term project planning.
- Creative Ownership: See your effects directly impacting the player’s experience in a major global franchise.
