The Role: Your Mission
As a Senior Compositor, you are the final architect of the image. Your role is to seamlessly blend live-action footage with computer-generated (CG) elements to create flawless, photorealistic scenes. You carry the responsibility for the aesthetic integrity and technical quality of the final frames delivered to our global clients.
You will work at the intersection of art and science, using Foundry Nuke to solve complex visual puzzles. From subtle atmospheric enhancements to full-scale CG environment integration, your eye for detail will be the benchmark for the studio’s output.
Detailed Responsibilities
1. High-End Compositing & Integration
- Seamless Integration: Combine 2D, 3D, and live-action elements into a singular, cohesive shot that realizes the vision of the VFX Supervisor and the Client.
- Photorealism Mastery: Utilize your deep understanding of light, color, and optics to ensure that CG elements sit perfectly within the plate.
- Advanced Techniques: Perform complex tasks including 2D/3D tracking, blue/green screen extraction, rotoscoping oversight, and intricate color grading.
2. Technical Excellence & Quality Control
- Final Output Quality: Take ownership of the aesthetic and technical quality of assigned shots, ensuring they meet the “Outpost Standard” before submission.
- Consistency: Maintain a uniform look and color balance across sequences, ensuring that the visual narrative remains unbroken.
- Pipeline Contribution: Maintain clean, organized Nuke scripts that follow studio conventions, allowing for efficient hand-offs and collaborative troubleshooting.
3. Collaboration & Leadership
- Creative Evaluation: Work directly with the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to evaluate the best technical approach for challenging shots.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and constructive feedback to junior and mid-level compositors, helping to elevate the overall skill level of the department.
- Feedback Implementation: Actively apply shot notes and creative direction with speed and precision.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Nuke Expertise: In-depth, expert-level knowledge of Nuke. You should be comfortable with 3D projections, deep compositing, and complex gizmos.
- Artistic Vision: A strong eye for composition, lighting, and color theory. You must be able to judge photorealism with a critical eye.
- Problem Solving: The ability to take a “moderately challenging to very challenging” shot and find an elegant, efficient solution.
- Education/Experience: While a degree in Film or Digital Arts is preferred, we value extraordinary talent and potential above all else. Significant experience in high-end VFX is a must.
Soft Skills
- Detail-Oriented: You notice the one-pixel edge fringe or the slight mismatch in grain that others miss.
- Communication: Fluent in English (French is a plus in Montreal). You can articulate technical challenges and creative ideas clearly.
- Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
- Cultural Fit: A genuine, friendly attitude. We celebrate our successes together and support each other through challenges.
