About WildBrain Studios
WildBrain Studios is the creative force behind some of the world’s most beloved franchises. We pride ourselves on an artist-centric culture that balances high-octane production with employee wellbeing. Whether you are working from the beautiful backdrop of British Columbia or from your home office elsewhere in the world, you are part of a supportive, inclusive team that values growth, training, and a healthy work-life balance.
Detailed Responsibilities
As the VFX Supervisor, you are the technical and creative “North Star” for the production. Your influence spans from initial concepting through to the final pixel.
1. Creative & Technical Leadership
You will work in a “Creative Quad” alongside the Director, Producer, and Art Director. Your primary goal is to interpret the Art Director’s vision and translate it into a viable technical roadmap. You must establish the technical foundation (pipeline, shaders, lighting rigs) that allows artists to hit the visual targets without breaking the budget or the schedule.
2. Client & Stakeholder Management
You are the primary technical liaison for clients. This involves:
Conducting creative reviews and technical presentations.
Articulating complex technical hurdles in a way that production management and clients can understand.
Building consensus between the “dreamers” (Creatives) and the “builders” (Tech/Pipeline).
3. Pipeline Innovation & Problem Solving
Efficiency is key in feature-length CG. You will:
Identify and implement new techniques or tools that add value and speed to the production.
Collaborate with Production Technology to resolve bottlenecks.
Anticipate potential creative or technical “red flags” and troubleshoot them before they impact the floor.
4. Team Mentorship
A supervisor is only as good as their crew. You will assess the skill levels of your leads and artists, recommending specific training to the Head of CG where necessary. You are responsible for fostering a culture where feedback is encouraged and every team member feels empowered to innovate.
Candidate Requirements
WildBrain Studios is looking for a seasoned veteran who has seen it all—from complex fluid simulations to the nuances of stylized character lighting.
- Industry Tenure: Minimum of 8 years in film or animation, with at least 5 years in a Supervisory role.
- Feature Pipeline Mastery: An “under the hood” understanding of CG feature pipelines, particularly regarding how data flows from layout through to compositing.
- Technical Proficiency: * Strong preference for experience with Arnold or RenderMan.
Proficiency in Maya and Nuke.
A deep understanding of different animation styles (e.g., photorealistic vs. highly stylized/snappy).
- Bidding & Budgeting: Experience partnering with Production Management to ensure shot bids are accurate, realistic, and include necessary technical assumptions.
- Communication: The ability to communicate respectfully and positively, even under the high-pressure environment of a deadline-driven feature.
The “Wild” Side: Perks & Benefits
Life at WildBrain Studios is designed to be rewarding. We offer a comprehensive package that looks after our “Wild Brains” holistically:
- Financial Growth: Competitive salary with RRSP matching to help you plan for the future.
- Flexible Benefits: Multi-tiered health and dental benefits—choose the coverage level that fits your family’s needs.
- Wellness Support: Free mental health resources and a culture that actively discourages “crunch” in favor of sustainable productivity.
- Community: From virtual coffee chats to in-person studio mixers in Vancouver, we keep our global team connected.
- Inclusion: We are committed to a barrier-free work environment and provide accommodations for people with disabilities throughout the hiring process.
Nice-to-Have Skills
If you possess these, you’ll be at the top of our list:
Experience with Houdini for FX-heavy sequences.
Proficiency with Gaffer or node-based look-dev software like Katana or Solaris.
A background in traditional cinematography or photography.
