Detailed Role Breakdown
A. Roto Artist (Mid-Senior)
The Rotoscopy department at SM Rolling FX is where the magic of separation begins. We are looking for artists who view Roto not just as a task, but as a craft of precision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Articulated Masking: Create highly accurate, frame-by-frame shapes for complex organic and inorganic movements (humans, vehicles, hair, etc.).
- Motion Blur Integration: Ensuring that all mattes correctly represent the motion blur found in the original plate to maintain edge integrity during compositing.
- Tracking Proficiency: Utilizing point, planar (Mocha), and 3D tracking data to minimize manual keyframing and ensure “rock-solid” stability.
- Quality Control: Self-reviewing work against background plates to ensure zero “chatter” or “boiling” on edges.
B. Paint & Prep Artist (Mid-Senior)
The Paint department is the “digital repair shop” of SM Rolling FX. We need artists who can look at a cluttered plate and visualize a clean, cinematic canvas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plate Restoration: Removing tracking markers, rigs, wires, and safety equipment from live-action footage.
- Texture & Grain Matching: Using advanced techniques to ensure that any “re-painted” area matches the original film grain and sensor noise perfectly.
- Complex Reconstructions: Rebuilding background elements behind moving characters or objects using 2.5D projection techniques.
- Beauty Work: Performing digital cosmetic enhancements, including skin retouching and costume fixes, while maintaining a natural look.
Technical Skill Requirements
To maintain the high standards at SM Rolling FX, candidates are expected to be proficient in the following software ecosystem:
- Foundry Nuke: The heart of our pipeline. Candidates should be comfortable with node-based logic and basic gizmos.
- Silhouette FX: Our preferred tool for high-end rotoscopy and specialized paint tasks.
- Mocha Pro: For advanced planar tracking and stabilization solutions.
- Pipeline Knowledge: Understanding of color spaces (ACES/Linear), aspect ratios, and file naming conventions.

What to Bring:
- Updated Resume: A physical copy detailing your project history and software expertise.

Education & Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a recognized VFX studio.
- A degree or diploma in Fine Arts, Animation, or Visual Effects is preferred but not mandatory if the portfolio is outstanding.
