The Role: VFX Roto Artist
As a VFX Roto Artist at SM Rolling FX, you will serve as an essential foundational pillar of our visual effects pipeline. Rotoscopy is the critical bridge between raw live-action footage and the magical world of digital compositing and CGI integration.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will revolve around creating precise mattes and cuts for various elements within a shot. Whether you are isolating moving characters, complex props, or intricate background elements, your work ensures that compositors and CG artists have clean, accurate layers to build upon.
Key Responsibilities:
- Precision Rotoscopy: Generate accurate, smooth, and frame-accurate roto shapes (splines) for complex moving objects, actors, clothing, hair, and hard-surface elements.
- Blue/Green Screen Clean-up: Assist with basic keying adjustments, wire removals, and edge refinements to deliver pristine plates to the compositing department.
- Quality Control: Rigorously review your own output against established pipeline standards to ensure tracking and edge consistency across frames and sequences.
- Pipeline Collaboration: Work closely with compositors, leads, and production coordinators to understand shot requirements, adhere to strict delivery schedules, and resolve technical challenges efficiently.
- Skill Development: Continuously sharpen your technical abilities, stay updated with emerging rotoscopy techniques, and adapt seamlessly to evolving project demands within a fast-paced studio environment.
What We Are Looking For
SM Rolling FX is searching for dedicated, sharp-eyed individuals who have a genuine passion for visual effects and a commitment to quality. While technical skills are vital, your attitude and work ethic matter just as much to us.
- Technical Competency: A strong understanding of standard industry rotoscopy tools and software (such as Silhouette, Mocha, or Nuke). Familiarity with spline creation, motion tracking, and layer organization is highly valued.
- Attention to Detail: An exceptional eye for edge definition, motion blur, timing, and spatial accuracy across changing lighting and camera angles.
- Time Management: The ability to prioritize tasks effectively, manage high-volume shot lists, and meet tight studio deadlines without compromising quality.
- Team Player: Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset. You take constructive feedback well and thrive in a team-oriented studio culture.
- On-Site Commitment: This is an on-site role based out of our studio in Pune, requiring regular daily attendance and active in-person engagement with your peers and supervisors.
