The Role: What Will You Do?

As a Senior Compositor in our Bratislava studio, your responsibilities will extend far beyond the workstation. You will be a linchpin between the creative vision of the Supervisors and the technical execution of the compositing team.

1. Visual Excellence and CG Integration

Your primary focus is the creation of high-quality image compositing. You will be responsible for the most complex shots in a project—those that require a “master’s touch.” This includes:

• Seamless Integration: Merging complex CG elements (characters, environments, FX) into live-action plates while maintaining perfect color balance, grain continuity, and lighting logic.

• Look Development: Working with VFX Supervisors to establish the visual “language” of a sequence and ensuring that look is maintained across dozens of shots.

2. Leadership and Mentorship

A Senior role at PFX is defined by its impact on others. You will:

• Nurture Talent: Review the work of junior and mid-level artists, providing constructive, actionable feedback that helps them grow.

• Foster Culture: Lead by example with a “can-do” attitude, maintaining morale during tight deadlines and encouraging a collaborative, ego-free atmosphere.

• Delegate: Effectively assign tasks based on artist strengths to ensure the project stays on track.

3. Strategic Production Support

You will play a vital role in the “big picture” of the studio:

• Bidding Support: Assist the production team during the bidding process by evaluating shot complexity and estimating the time/resources required.

• Communication: Act as a bridge between the VFX/CG Supervisors and the artists, ensuring that changes in creative direction are communicated clearly and implemented efficiently.

4. Technical Innovation

We want you to help us build a better studio. This involves:

• Pipeline Optimization: Identifying new tools, scripts, or techniques that can speed up our workflow or increase our visual quality.

• Template Creation: Setting up “master gizmos” or Nuke templates to ensure consistency across the entire team for a specific sequence.

• Troubleshooting: Serving as the final line of defense for technical issues that arise within the comp pipeline.

What Makes You a Match?

We are looking for a specific blend of artistic intuition and technical mastery. While you don’t necessarily need “Lead” in your current title, you must demonstrate the maturity and leadership qualities required to guide a project.

Technical Mastery

• Nuke Expertise: You should have an advanced, almost instinctive proficiency in Foundry’s Nuke. You understand the math behind the nodes, not just which buttons to press.

• Comprehensive Skillset: Expert knowledge of keying (green/blue screen), rotoscoping, 2D/3D tracking, grading, and complex CG integration.

• 3D Literacy: A deep understanding of the 3D pipeline (lighting, rendering, AOVs, and deep compositing) is essential to ensure CG elements look photographic.

• Color Science: A strong grasp of color-space procedures (ACES, linear workflows) and a refined sense of color grading.

Artistic & Soft Skills

• The “Creative Eye”: You can spot a single pixel out of place or a slight mismatch in black levels from across the room. Your sense of lighting and composition must be top-tier.

• Problem-Solving: You enjoy the challenge of a “broken” shot and have the technical depth to find a workaround when standard methods fail.

• Communication: The ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical production staff or junior artists is crucial.

Deep Dive: The Senior Compositor’s Impact on Production

In a studio of our size, the Senior Compositor acts as the “Glue” of the VFX pipeline. Here is how your expertise influences different departments:

Interaction with CG/Lighting: You will provide feedback to the Lighting department regarding AOVs and render passes. Because you are the one “assembling” the final image, your insights into what is needed (more rim light, a different shadow pass, or specific utility passes) are invaluable for saving time in the long run.

Interaction with Production: Producers rely on you to flag “red zones” early. If a shot is becoming a “black hole” for hours, you are the person who identifies why and proposes a smarter way to finish it on time without sacrificing quality.

Interaction with Juniors: You are the primary educator. By setting up clean, organized scripts and templates, you teach the juniors the importance of “Non-Destructive” workflows and studio standards, ensuring that anyone can pick up a script and understand it.
