Ubisoft Montréal – Montréal, QC, Canada
Ubisoft is a global leader in the gaming industry, dedicated to creating original and memorable experiences that push the boundaries of entertainment. Our Montréal studio, the largest in the world, is the birthplace of legendary franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and the chaotic, breathtaking world of Far Cry. We are currently seeking a technically gifted and artistically driven VFX Artist to join our production team and help define the next chapter of immersive, high-octane gameplay.
Company Overview: The Heart of Innovation
At Ubisoft Montréal, we believe that diverse perspectives are the fuel for innovation. Our studio is a vibrant ecosystem where creativity meets cutting-edge technology. As a member of the Far Cry team, you will be part of a legacy known for its systemic gameplay, lush environments, and explosive action. We provide an environment where you are encouraged to “create the unknown,” supported by a global network of experts and a culture that values both individual talent and collective success.
Role Overview
As a VFX Artist on the Far Cry project, you will be responsible for creating the visceral, high-impact effects that define the franchise’s identity. Your work will bridge the gap between environmental storytelling and gameplay feedback. From the subtle movement of smoke and the complex simulation of water interactions to the high-stakes spectacle of fire and explosions, you will bring life and weight to the digital world.
This role requires a unique fusion of aesthetic sensibility and technical problem-solving. You will design real-time effects that not only look stunning but also enhance gameplay readability and player immersion, all while operating within the rigorous technical constraints of a modern AAA game engine.
Key Responsibilities
1. Real-Time Effect Creation
Design and implement high-quality environmental and gameplay-driven effects using complex particle systems and original textures.
Develop assets for smoke, fire, weather patterns, explosions, and fluid simulations that align with the Far Cry art direction.
Create and refine textures and shaders specifically tailored for real-time visual effects.
2. Technical Integration & Optimization
Integrate VFX into the game engine, ensuring that all effects are optimized for performance across target platforms.
Balance visual fidelity with gameplay “readability,” ensuring that effects provide the necessary feedback for player actions without cluttering the frame.
Debug and troubleshoot technical issues related to VFX performance and engine compatibility.
3. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
Partner with Creative Leadership to understand the high-level vision and establish VFX priorities for each development milestone.
Collaborate with Programming teams to assess technical needs and contribute to the evolution of proprietary VFX tools and pipelines.
Work alongside Gameplay Designers to ensure that effects effectively communicate game states (e.g., weapon impacts, character status, environmental hazards).
4. Iteration & Community Engagement
Utilize playtest data and peer feedback to iteratively improve the quality and impact of visual effects.
Adapt to evolving project needs and adjust effects based on cross-team requirements to enhance the overall player journey.
Where applicable, respond to post-launch feedback to refine and polish effects for the global community of players.
Required Qualifications & Technical Skills
The ideal candidate possesses a robust portfolio that demonstrates both artistic flair and a deep understanding of the technicalities behind real-time rendering.
Core Qualifications:
Artistic Fundamentals: Expert-level understanding of lighting, composition, color theory, and proportion.
Real-Time VFX Experience: Proven track record of creating impactful visual effects for gameplay-driven titles.
3D & 2D Workflow: Hands-on experience with 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting, paired with proficiency in 2D art tools (e.g., Photoshop) and compositing software.
Mathematical Proficiency: A firm grasp of basic vector math (dot products, cross products, etc.) as applied to particle behavior and VFX systems.
Technical Stack:
Game Engines: Extensive experience working within professional game engines (e.g., Unreal, Unity, or proprietary tech).
Procedural Tools: Familiarity with tools like Houdini for VFX authoring is a significant asset.
Shaders: Experience in shader creation and optimization (HLSL/GLSL or node-based editors) is highly desirable.
What You Bring to the Team
Collaborative Spirit: An ability to receive feedback with an open mind and adapt your work to meet the needs of a large-scale production.
Detail-Oriented Mindset: A commitment to the small details that create a sense of realism and physical weight in a game environment.
Problem-Solving Ability: A proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical constraints before they impact the pipeline.
