  • Position Title: Cinematics Animator
  • Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
  • Work Model: Hybrid
  • Worker Type: Temporary Employee
  • Salary Range: $75,900 – $105,600 CAD
  • Experience: 3+ years in CG Character Animation
  • Primary Toolset: Maya, MotionBuilder (preferred)

Electronic Arts (EA) is a global leader in digital interactive entertainment, developing and delivering games, content, and online services for Internet-connected consoles, mobile devices, and personal computers. This specific opening sits within EA SPORTS, the creative powerhouse behind the world-renowned FC franchise (formerly FIFA). With over 200 million engaged players, EA SPORTS FC represents the pinnacle of sports simulation.

We are seeking a high-caliber Cinematics Animator to join our Vancouver studio. This role is fundamental to the “immersion” factor of our titles—bridging the gap between raw gameplay and cinematic storytelling. You will be responsible for bringing the world’s most famous athletes to life, ensuring that every celebration, pre-match sequence, and locker-room drama feels authentic, visceral, and polished.

Cinematics Animator: Role Overview & Departmental Impact

The EA SPORTS FC team thrives on innovation, passion, and teamwork. As a Cinematics Animator, you are not just moving characters; you are directing digital performances. You will work within the Cinematics Team to refine Motion Capture (MOCAP) data and layer it with high-end keyframe animation to achieve a “broadcast-plus” level of quality.

This is a Temporary Employee position, ideal for an experienced artist looking to make a massive impact on a high-profile, annual release cycle. You will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, maintaining the meticulous detail required for close-up facial work and complex body mechanics.

II. Detailed Responsibilities for Cinematics Animator

1. Artistic Execution

  • Vision Alignment: Collaborate closely with the Cinematics Director to internalize and execute the visual style and narrative pacing of the game’s sequences.

  • MOCAP Integration: Assemble and clean Motion Capture performances. You will be responsible for merging disparate data sets with props and environment assets to create a seamless scene.

  • Keyframe Polishing: Deliver expert-level keyframe animation for both faces and bodies. You must ensure that transitions are fluid and that “the soul” of the athlete is visible in the performance.

  • Camera Animation: Animate cinematic cameras with a keen eye for composition, depth of field, and lens choice, mimicking professional sports broadcast techniques.

2. Technical Problem Solving

  • Engine Integration: Test animations directly within the game engine to ensure technical fidelity and visual consistency under real-time lighting conditions.

  • Pipeline Feedback: Work alongside Technical Artists and Engineers to identify bottlenecks. You will provide actionable feedback on animation rigs, proprietary tools, and 1st/3rd party software.

  • Troubleshooting: Solve complex technical issues related to deformation, rigging glitches, or export errors under tight production deadlines.

3. Leadership & Collaboration

  • Feedback Loops: Provide peer reviews for both internal team members and external vendors, ensuring a unified bar of quality across the entire production.

  • Cross-Discipline Communication: Coordinate with lighters, modelers, and VFX artists to ensure that animated assets are optimized for the final cinematic output.

III. Qualifications & Competencies

Technical Requirements

  • Tenure: A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in CG character animation (Games, Film, or high-end VFX).

  • Software Mastery: Extensive knowledge of 3D animation packages (Maya or XSI). Proficiency in Autodesk MotionBuilder is highly preferred due to the heavy reliance on MOCAP in the EA SPORTS pipeline.

  • Facial Animation: Experience working with advanced, high-density facial rigs.

  • Workflow Knowledge: A complete understanding of the animation pipeline, from initial “previz” and blocking to final polish and engine implementation.

Performance Competencies

  • Meticulousness: A drive for perfection in body mechanics and weight.

  • Adaptability: The ability to pivot between different software toolsets and workflow methodologies as project needs evolve.

  • Communication: Exceptional technical communication skills, allowing for smooth collaboration with engineers and technical animators.

  • Passion: While not mandatory, a deep interest in Soccer/Football and Sports culture is considered a significant asset.

IV. Compensation, Benefits, and Wellness

Financial Compensation

The good-faith pay range for this role in British Columbia is $75,900 – $105,600 CAD. The final offer is determined by:

  • Educational Background: Relevant degrees or certifications.

  • Experience Level: Years of involvement in AAA game cycles.

  • Specialized Skills: Mastery of proprietary EA tools or niche animation techniques.

Total Rewards & Benefits

Even as a temporary employee, EA provides a robust support structure:

  • Health & Dental: Extended coverage for health, dental, and vision.

  • Time Off: 3 weeks of vacation per year (accrued) plus 10 days of sick time.

  • Wellness: Holistic support for mental and physical well-being.

  • Perks: Complimentary games and opportunities for professional growth within the EA Studios ecosystem.
