THE ROLE: THE MASTER OF ATMOSPHERE

As a Freelance Artist Lighting Specialist at Form Studios, your primary mission is to elevate the narrative through visual mood. You are responsible for the final “paint” on the canvas, ensuring that characters pop, environments feel vast, and the viewer’s eye is exactly where the director intends it to be.

Your Technical & Creative Mastery:

• Cinematic Storytelling: You use light to tell a story. Whether it is the harsh, high-contrast shadows of a noir-inspired thriller or the soft, ethereal glow of a fantasy epic, you know how to evoke emotion through your light rigs.

• Character Lighting: You possess a deep understanding of portrait lighting. You know how to emphasize character features, maintain consistent eye-lights, and ensure that character performances are never lost in the shadows.

• Environmental Integration: You can blend 3D assets into a cohesive world. You understand how to use volumetric effects, global illumination, and bounce light to make a digital environment feel lived-in and physically grounded.

• Technical Optimization: While we push for the highest quality, you understand the importance of render efficiency. You build clean, organized lighting scenes that allow for fast iterations and meet the technical requirements of the compositing team.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking a Freelance Artist Lighting Specialist who functions with the precision of a Director of Photography (DP). You should have a “problem-solver” mindset—when a scene feels “flat” or technical artifacts appear in the render, you possess the diagnostic depth to resolve them quickly.

Core Requirements:

1. Photorealistic Eye: You have an innate understanding of how light behaves in the real world—absorption, reflection, refraction, and diffraction. You can translate these physical properties into digital tools to achieve a photoreal result.

2. Director Collaboration: You are adept at taking creative direction. You can take a mood board or a verbal description and turn it into a lighting setup that exceeds expectations.

3. Pipeline Versatility: You are comfortable working with multi-pass rendering and understand how your lighting AOVs (Shadows, Specular, Rim, etc.) will be used by the Nuke compositing team to finalize the shot.
