We’re now looking for a talented Groom Artist to join our Melbourne-based Assets Team.

Our Melbourne studio is a hub of creativity, innovation, and technical excellence, and we are looking for a Groom Artist to join our growing Assets Team.

🔹 What You’ll Do

  • Create high-quality hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters and creatures using Framestore’s proprietary tools.
  • Collaborate with Creature FX simulation TDs to ensure guide hair layouts meet dynamic requirements.
  • Work closely with Modelling, Rigging, Animation & Lighting teams for seamless pipeline integration.

🔹 What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience in a similar grooming role on CG creature projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Maya.
  • Experience creating hair/fur/feather grooms.
  • Problem-solving mindset with both aesthetic + technical awareness.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication & organizational skills.

🔹 Nice to Have

  • Experience with Unix/Linux environments.
  • Knowledge of dynamic hair simulation or other dynamics.

The Role: Defining Creature Realism

As a Groom Artist at Framestore, you will be instrumental in the creation of lifelike digital characters and creatures. You will be responsible for the intricate development of hair, fur, and feathers, ensuring that every strand contributes to the narrative and visual fidelity of our projects. You will act as a bridge between the modeling and simulation departments, ensuring your work is both aesthetically grounded and technically performant.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Groom Development: Design and execute high-quality hair, fur, and feather systems for complex creature and character assets using our proprietary tools.
  • Pipeline Integration: Collaborate closely with Creature FX (CFX) simulation TDs to ensure your guide hair and groom layouts are optimized for dynamic simulation.
  • Cross-Departmental Synergy: Work hand-in-hand with the Modelling, Rigging, Animation, and Lighting departments to ensure your grooms integrate seamlessly into the production pipeline.
  • Technical Problem-Solving: Maintain a balance between artistic excellence and technical constraints, providing solutions that hold up under the scrutiny of world-class feature film requirements.
