Job Overview
The Studio Mission
Brown Bag Films Bali is part of an award-winning global network dedicated to “Simple Substantial Stories.” Our Bali studio focuses on high-end episodic and feature-length content for industry titans like Disney and Netflix. We provide a “Comfortable Working Environment” that prioritizes artist well-being, technical growth, and the production of “Prestigious Projects.”
Role Overview: Impact & Responsibilities
The 3D Grooming Artist is a specialized role requiring a unique blend of artistic vision and technical problem-solving. You will be responsible for the creation of high-fidelity hair, fur, and feather systems that remain stable throughout the production pipeline.
1. Artistic Groom Development
Creation & Styling: Design and execute complex hair and fur grooms for a diverse range of characters as assigned by the Supervisor.
Technical Grooming: Utilize procedural and manual grooming tools to define clumping, frizz, and styling parameters that align with the character’s personality.
Aesthetic Standards: Maintain a sharp eye for detail, ensuring that the groom looks believable in various lighting conditions and matches the established art direction.
2. Pipeline Integration & Quality Control
Inter-departmental Collaboration: Liaise with Modeling (for scalp and surface prep), Rigging (for dynamics and simulation), and Lighting (for shader development) to ensure the groom is production-ready.
Render Testing: Conduct iterative render tests as the groom progresses to verify look-dev and technical stability.
Self-QC: Implement rigorous “Quality Control” checks on your own work to minimize back-and-forth during the approval process with the Director.
3. Leadership & File Management
Mentorship: Provide guidance and organization assistance to junior/mid-level groomers, sharing best practices for efficient asset creation.
Data Organization: Maintain an impeccable file management system, ensuring all grooming assets are optimized and easy to navigate for the downstream departments.
Deadline Adherence: Strategize personal and team time management to ensure all assets are delivered according to the set production schedule.
Professional Qualifications & Technical Skills
We are seeking a candidate who views grooming as a craft.
Experience Baseline: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a similar grooming role, specifically focusing on CG creature projects for film or high-end television.
Software Mastery: Thorough knowledge of Autodesk Maya is essential. Proficiency in industry-standard grooming tools (such as XGen, Ornatrix, or Yeti) is highly preferred.
Pipeline Literacy: A deep understanding of the full CG pipeline and how grooming interacts with simulation and lighting/compositing.
Artistic Eye: An appreciation for both the technical requirements (physics, proceduralism) and the aesthetic requirements (flow, silhouettes, and color) of grooming.
Problem-Solving: The ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues related to follicle density, clumping logic, or render-time bottlenecks.
Behavioral Expectations
Relocation: A genuine willingness to relocate to Bali to join our on-site team and immerse yourself in our studio culture.
Collaboration: A strong work ethic and the interpersonal skills needed to work as part of a high-pressure, deadline-oriented team.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-departmental coordination.
Perks, Benefits & Life in Bali
Brown Bag Films Bali offers more than just a job; we offer a lifestyle and a career path.
Health & Security: Comprehensive Medical, Health, and Life Insurance, plus Retirement Benefit Plans.
Professional Growth: Continuous training and development programs to keep you at the forefront of grooming technology.
Studio Culture: A vibrant social calendar with “Fun Activities,” team-building events, and a focus on work-life balance.
Relocation Support: For the right candidate, we offer assistance in transitioning to the beautiful island of Bali.
Application & Selection Process
We prioritize the quality of your reel and your technical understanding of grooming systems.
Reel Submission: Provide a demo reel specifically highlighting hair, fur, or feather work. Include breakdown sheets showing the grooming guides or procedural setups.
Technical Interview: A discussion with our Asset Leads to evaluate your knowledge of Maya and grooming pipelines.
Final Review: A meeting with our production team to discuss project fit and relocation logistics.
