The Mission: Defining the Connected Battlefield Universe

The Battlefield franchise is entering its most expansive chapter yet. We are building a connected universe that spans across multiple titles, including the highly anticipated Battlefield 6 and the groundbreaking Battlefield REDSEC.

At Ripple Effect, our culture is built on the idea that “everyone is part of the story.” We are a team where creativity thrives and ideas matter. As a Senior Concept Artist, you won’t just be drawing assets; you will be problem-solving the “unknown.” You will partner with Creative and Design Directors to explore new locales, tactical hardware, and character archetypes that stay true to the unique DNA of Battlefield—all-out warfare, destruction, and immersion.

Detailed Job Description for Senior Concept Artist

The Senior Concept Artist is a “Lead by Doing” role. You are not responsible for administrative tasking; instead, your primary focus is the creation of high-fidelity visual targets that inspire the entire development team. You will use every tool at your disposal—from classical painting and photobashing to 3D block-outs in Unreal Engine or Blender—to prove that a concept works both aesthetically and functionally.

Key Responsibilities

1. Visual Target & Mood Creation

  • Creative Vision: Develop “hero” illustrations that establish the mood, tone, and lighting for new maps and environments.
  • Stylistic Evolution: Collaborate with Art Directors to refine style guides, ensuring that every asset produced—whether in-house or externally—feels like it belongs in the Battlefield universe.

2. Asset Design & Readability

  • Blueprint Ready: Create detailed, readable designs for characters, props, weapons, and vehicles. Your work must be clear enough for 3D Environment and Character Artists to translate into game-ready assets without ambiguity.
  • Industrial Design: Apply a functional, “tacticool” lens to hardware. If you design a vehicle or a weapon, it should look like it functions realistically within the game’s world.

3. Level & Environment Partnership

  • Paint-overs: Work directly with Level Designers to provide paint-overs of existing “grey-box” or low-poly geometry. This helps environment artists understand the final intended texture, story, and detail of a space.
  • Research & Iteration: Conduct extensive research into military locales, modern architecture, and futuristic hardware to ensure authenticity.

4. External & Leadership Support

  • Vendor Collaboration: Draft creative briefs for external partner studios. You will provide constructive artistic feedback and “redlines” to ensure their work meets EA’s quality bar.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Support senior leadership by creating high-impact visuals for milestone reviews and stakeholder presentations. You are the visual storyteller for the project’s progress.

Qualifications: What You Bring to Ripple Effect

Professional Experience

  • Industry Veteran: A minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in the video game industry specifically as a Concept Artist.
  • Production Knowledge: You understand the “how” of game development. You know where your work fits into the pipeline and have strong instincts for estimating how long a task will take.

Artistic Mastery

  • Foundational Excellence: An elite-tier portfolio that demonstrates a mastery of anatomy, perspective, color theory, and cinematic lighting.
  • The “Battlefield” Eye: A demonstrated interest in (and aptitude for) military hardware, tactical gear, and industrial shape language.
  • Hybrid Workflow:
    • Expert: Adobe Photoshop (Painting/Photobashing).

    • Proficient: 3D DCC tools such as Blender, Unreal Engine, or Cinema4D. Using 3D to establish perspective and lighting in your concepts is a mandatory part of our workflow.

Leadership & Mindset

  • Documentation: A willingness to document your process and create guides that help others.
  • Collaborative Spirit: You thrive when working with Leads of other disciplines (VFX, Lighting, Design) and have a genuine desire to mentor and develop junior artists.
  • Resilience: You view feedback as a tool for improvement and are comfortable iterating through multiple versions of an idea to find the “perfect” solution.
