At Framestore, we believe that the intersection of talent and technology is where the magic happens. Driven by a culture of relentless creativity and inspired by the technological frontiers of the future, we set out every day to “reframe the possible.”
The Role: Creature Supervisor
We are looking for an exceptional Creature Supervisor to join our dynamic team in Melbourne. This is a leadership-tier position that sits at the heart of our asset pipeline.
The Creature Supervisor is a vital strategic partner who supports the Head of Creatures. You will work collaboratively with VFX, CG, and Animation Supervisors, as well as department HODs, to oversee all aspects of specific hero creature and character work.
This role isn’t just about managing a pipeline; it’s about directing human talent, defining high-level workflows, and ensuring that every creature that leaves our studio is indistinguishable from reality.
You will be responsible for the creative and technical integrity of hero creature builds on a show-by-show basis. By complying with and advancing Framestore’s state-of-the-art quality standards, you will unite our artists and direct them—through both delegation and leading by example—to achieve world-class results.
Key Responsibilities and Expectations
1. Visionary Asset Development
Creative Alignment: Work closely with show Supervision teams to explore, iterate, and produce the highest quality creature assets that meet or exceed client requirements and technical specifications.
Quality Control: Review the work of artists within the creature department, ensuring every iteration meets Framestore’s rigorous artistic and technical benchmarks.
Reference & Standards: Maintain and refine existing creature template assets and reference libraries to ensure consistency across the studio’s output.
2. Innovation and Technical Strategy
Evolution of Craft: Collaborate with the Head of Creatures to identify and advance key areas of improvement for our creature quality standards.
Proprietary Development: Investigate and test how Framestore’s proprietary tools and machine learning developments can be leveraged to streamline character and creature workflows.
Problem Solving: Offer practical, hands-on solutions for complex technical challenges, promoting show-specific approaches that maintain efficiency without sacrificing visual fidelity.
3. Collaborative Leadership
Cross-Departmental Synergy: Support various asset departments (Modelling, Rigging, Groom, CFX) to improve workflow efficiencies.
Feasibility Management: Partner with VFX Producers to ensure the creative ambition of a project remains feasible within the established schedule and budget constraints.
Communication: Act as a clear communicator, briefing departmental teams on the latest standards, potential challenges, and identifying issues before they impact production.
What We Are Looking For
Essential Skills and Experience
Production Pedigree: Extensive production experience in a similar leadership or supervisory position within a major VFX studio.
Technical Versatility: A deep “hands-on” background in at least two or more creature specialties, such as Modelling, Texturing, Look Development, Rigging, or Creature FX (CFX/Sim).
Leadership Acumen: Proven experience leading large teams on complex VFX film projects, with a history of meeting strict schedule and budget requirements.
Artistic Sensibility: A high-level creative eye for anatomy, movement, and physical realism. You must be able to provide constructive, actionable feedback.
Change Agency: The ability to initiate and promote change within a pipeline, staying adaptable as industry standards evolve.
Desirable Technical “Plus” Skills
Coding & Scripting: Proficiency in Python or C++ to help customize tools or troubleshoot pipeline bottlenecks.
Software Diversity: Experience with a wide variety of Industry Standard DCC packages (e.g., Maya, Houdini, ZBrush, Mari).
Machine Learning: Experience with ML approaches used in VFX, specifically for muscle deformation or facial performance.
