The Launchpad Experience

Role & Responsibilities
As an FX Artist Intern, your primary focus will be the creation of CG simulations that define the atmosphere and action of a scene. You will be tasked with:
- Naturalistic Simulations: Developing realistic fire, water, clouds, and smoke.
- Procedural Effects: Creating complex magical phenomena or particle systems.
- Destruction (RBD): Simulating rigid body dynamics for crumbling structures or environmental impact.
- Collaborative Pipeline: Working with the Lighting and Compositing teams to ensure simulations integrate seamlessly into the final frame.
Candidate Requirements
Technical Proficiencies
- Houdini: A solid foundational knowledge of SideFX Houdini is essential.
- Simulation Techniques: Understanding the math and physics behind smoke, fire, and water.
- Coding/Scripting: Familiarity with Vex for Houdini and Nuke for basic compositing/pre-viz of your work.
- Pipeline Awareness: A general understanding of how a shot travels from tracking and animation through to final render.
Soft Skills
- Problem-Solving: The ability to troubleshoot complex simulation errors and optimize heavy caches.
- Communication: Clearly explaining your technical approach during daily “dailies” or meetings.
- Organization: Managing large datasets and adhering to strict studio naming conventions and deadlines.
Eligibility & Legal Requirements for FX Artist
To maintain the integrity of the Launchpad program, candidates must meet the following strict criteria:
- Academic Status: You must be in your final year of a BA, MA, or PhD program, or have graduated within the last 12 months (as of July 2026).
- Right to Work: You must be a UK citizen or hold a valid Student/Graduate/Resident Visa that covers the entire duration of the internship (July–August). Framestore cannot provide visa sponsorship for internship roles.
- Availability: Full commitment is required for the 8-week period starting July 6, 2026.
