Role Overview
DNEG is seeking a highly experienced Lead FX TD to join its Performance department in Sydney. This role is central to the creation of high-end visual effects simulations for feature films, encompassing a wide range of dynamic effects including fire, smoke, water, destruction, and atmospheric phenomena.
As a Lead FX TD, you will oversee the development and execution of complex simulations, working with assets generated by Build, Layout, and Animation teams. You will leverage industry-standard tools—primarily Houdini—alongside proprietary pipeline systems to deliver visually stunning and physically accurate effects.
This position combines technical leadership, artistic direction, and hands-on production work, making it ideal for professionals who excel in both simulation development and team collaboration within high-end VFX pipelines.
Candidate Profile: What You’ll Need
We are looking for an industry veteran who has seen it all—someone who can stay calm in the eye of a storm (even if they’re the one simulating that storm).
Professional Experience:
- Proven Track Record: Extensive experience working on multiple high-end feature films. We want to see a reel that demonstrates a mastery of timing, scale, and physical realism.
- Expert Software Knowledge: You must be an expert in Houdini. While experience in Maya or other packages is great, Houdini is the engine that drives our FX department.
- Technical Depth: A strong general TD background with the ability to script and automate tasks. Familiarity with the “under-the-hood” mechanics of physical solvers is essential.
Soft Skills & Leadership:
- Communication: You must be a clear, proactive communicator. Leading a team at DNEG requires the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Adaptability: The VFX landscape changes every day. You should have a hunger for learning new proprietary software and staying at the cutting edge of industry techniques.
- Resilience: You thrive under pressure. You can manage a team’s morale and output even when production deadlines are looming.
