We believe that exceptional games are born from a fusion of uncompromised creative ambition and technical mastery. Our team of world-class developers operates in a highly collaborative, supportive environment where every discipline has a voice. As we embark on our next chapter of dark, realistic worldbuilding, we are looking for a visionary artist who shares our passion for rich atmosphere, gritty realism, and precise attention to detail to help us shape the future of our upcoming intellectual properties.
The Role & Creative Philosophy
4A Games is seeking a highly accomplished, multi-faceted Senior Concept Artist to integrate directly into our core pre-production and visual development team. In this position, you will be a major creative force responsible for generating high-quality realistic illustrations, intricate sketches, and foundational industrial designs that define our game’s visual identity. Your portfolio will span across all facets of asset creation, including complex characters, terrifying creatures, vast environments, realistic weapons, and interactive props.
As a senior-level creator, your responsibilities extend far beyond creating standalone beautiful paintings. You will act as a close partner to our Art Director, helping to author, refine, and enforce the overarching visual direction of the game’s universe. You will operate at the vital intersection of raw creative imagination and practical production design, ensuring that every piece of concept art you deliver serves as a clear, functional blueprint that our downstream 3D modeling, animation, and technical art teams can translate smoothly into game engines.
Key Responsibilities as Senior Concept Artist
1. AAA Asset Design & Visual Development
- Comprehensive Conceptualization: Produce elite-tier, realistic concept art, orthographic breakdowns, and call-out sheets for characters, mutated or natural creatures, interior/exterior environments, tactical weapons, and mechanical props.
- Atmospheric Storytelling: Support the broader narrative and worldbuilding pipelines by executing high-fidelity keyframe illustrations that define cinematic composition, mood, localized lighting, weather effects, and global atmosphere.
- Stylistic Guardianship: Work in close alignment with the Art Director to actively expand, develop, and maintain a highly cohesive, unique visual identity across the game’s entire multi-layered universe.
2. Production Integration & 3D Pipeline Synergy
- Technical Translation: Ensure all concept designs are structurally logical, practical, and optimized for smooth, uncompromised translation into 3D production pipelines.
- Cross-Discipline Alignment: Collaborate proactively with Game Designers, Level Designers, Narrative Writers, 3D Asset Artists, Animators, and VFX teams to verify that your concepts support production requirements, gameplay mechanics, and polygon budget realities.
- 3D Workflow Fusion: Utilize 3D block-out pipelines (e.g., simple geometry, lighting passes, or basic sculpts) as a regular component of your concept generation workflow to ensure perfect perspective, scale, and spatial depth.
3. Leadership, Project Planning, & Mentorship
- Team Elevation: Actively review, critique, and provide constructive, inspiring, and clear artistic feedback on work created by mid-level and junior concept artists to elevate the studio’s overall quality bar.
- Scope Management: Participate in production planning sessions with project managers, helping to accurately estimate task scopes, establish execution priorities, and outline dependable delivery timelines for the art department.
- Problem Solving: Demonstrate exceptional artistic problem-solving capabilities, troubleshooting design flaws (e.g., non-functional weapon mechanisms or anatomical impossibilities) before they enter the expensive asset creation pipeline.
Qualifications & Technical Requirements for Senior Concept Artist
Minimum Requirements & Professional Experience
- Industry Longevity: A minimum of 3+ years of professional experience operating explicitly as a concept artist or visual development illustrator within the commercial video game or film industry.
- Shipped Game Credentials: A verified track record of success demonstrated by having contributed significantly to at least one shipped AAA or AA video game title, or showing equivalent high-end production experience.
- Master Portfolio: A diverse, striking design portfolio that showcases an elite capability to deliver photorealistic, grit-infused, and believable designs across characters, environments, weaponry, and technology.
- Anatomical & Material Expertise: An exceptional, flawless understanding of human and animal anatomy, fabric draping, structural architecture, industrial design, realistic material responses, global illumination, and perspective.
- Traditional Foundations: Rock-solid traditional art fundamentals, demonstrating a master-level grasp of value composition, focal points, shape language, and color theory.
- Software Command: Absolute proficiency using modern, industry-standard digital illustration suites (such as Adobe Photoshop).
- 3D Tool Integration: Demonstrated, hands-on experience utilizing basic 3D software (e.g., Blender, ZBrush, 3DCoat, or Maya) to set up lighting bases, perspective guides, or complex architectural foundations for your paintings.
- Language & Collaboration: A good professional command of the English language (both written and spoken) paired with a naturally collaborative, open, and team-oriented personality.
Desirable Assets & Preferences (Bonus Points)
- Direct, practical familiarity or past production experience working within advanced development environments such as our proprietary Exodus SDK or Unreal Engine.
- A strong, documented history of creating conceptual designs tailored to support the specific needs of real-time VFX and simulation teams (e.g., particle breaks, magical energy matrix designs, or environmental destruction states).
- Prior experience helping to author or maintain franchise style guides, visual bible references, or establishing foundational mood targets on a premium game project.
- An advanced, passionate understanding of cinematic camera composition, dynamic lens values, and deep visual storytelling techniques.
- An authentic passion for continuous, lifelong artistic learning alongside a sharp awareness of emerging software tools, concept art trends, film techniques, and global gaming industry evolutions.
