This role offers the unique opportunity to work directly within the custom lighting pipelines that drive massive, globally recognized titles, all while contributing to and refining the studio’s proprietary technology. The successful candidate will be a pivotal figure in realizing the artistic vision of Certain Affinity’s projects. This necessitates a strong partnership with Project Art Directors, ensuring that the environmental and cinematic lighting not only meets but amplifies their high-level aesthetic goals. It’s a role that transcends simple illumination; it is about visually defining mood, tone, and narrative context. As a Senior Advanced Lighting Artist, you will be relied upon to work seamlessly with artists across multiple disciplines—including concept, environment, materials, and VFX—to weave together cohesive, stunning in-game and cinematic content. Certain Affinity is looking for someone who doesn’t just apply light, but who possesses a profound understanding of color theory, atmospherics, and post-processing to create truly next-level imagery that captivates players. Core Responsibilities: The Architect of Atmosphere The responsibilities for this senior role are comprehensive, balancing artistic execution with technical pipeline development: The primary artistic duty is to author environmental lighting that acts as the visual bridge between level design requirements and the overarching art direction. This involves understanding how light affects gameplay readability while setting the desired mood. A key component of the role is to assist with look development, exploring and establishing the visual parameters and lighting styles for new environments and scenes. From a technical and pipeline perspective, the Senior Advanced Lighting Artist is expected to be a proactive problem-solver, consistently proposing lighting and pipeline improvements to optimize workflow, enhance quality, and maintain performance targets. Collaboration is crucial; you will work closely with concept, environment, materials, and VFX artists to ensure all visual elements—from textures to particle effects—interact correctly and harmoniously under the authored lighting scheme. Crucially, this is a senior role requiring self-sufficiency. The artist must be able to self-direct lighting intentions that logically expand upon the high-level guidance provided by the Art Director. Furthermore, a significant technical responsibility involves the implementation of scripted lighting events utilizing blueprints (or similar scripting tools) to dynamically support key gameplay cues and crucial narrative moments, bringing scenes to life through timing and drama. Finally, the artist will be the steward of the project’s overall visual signature, responsible for working with Global lighting settings such as post-process effects, exposure controls, and color grading. This technical mastery ensures the game reliably recreates the intended look guided by the art direction across all relevant platforms. To ensure performance and consistency, the artist will also be tasked with implementing lighting rigs and defining the best practices that provide reliable, scalable performance on diverse target platforms.
