Detailed Job Description
As a 3D Modeller / Artist at Climax Studios, your mission is to bridge the gap between imagination and reality. We are looking for an artist with a “creative spark”—someone who doesn’t just build assets but understands the narrative weight a single prop or environment can add to a game world. You will be responsible for generating realistic textures and props that meet the exacting standards of current-generation technology.
The ideal candidate is a versatile generalist with a specialist’s eye for detail. Whether you are sculpting a hero asset or optimizing background props to ensure peak performance, you will be a vital link in our art pipeline. You must be comfortable working within established art styles while bringing your own technical expertise to the table to solve complex visual problems.
Key Responsibilities
- Asset Creation: Design and build high-quality, optimized 3D props, collision meshes, and Level of Detail (LOD) assets to maintain performance without sacrificing visual fidelity.
- PBR Texturing: Create AAA-standard Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials and textures using the Substance Suite, ensuring every surface reacts realistically to light and environment.
- Pipeline Integration: Reliably demonstrate an aptitude for platform-specific technology and asset discipline, ensuring all work flows smoothly through our established pipeline processes.
- Collaboration & Iteration: Actively participate in group critiques, offering and receiving constructive feedback to ensure project cohesion. You must be able to iterate quickly based on art direction.
- Artistic Versatility: Follow and recreate a diverse range of established art styles, from hyper-realism to more stylized aesthetics, depending on the project’s specific needs.
Candidate Requirements
Technical Skills & Experience
- Professional Experience: Solid, proven experience in creating realistic style props, with a portfolio that showcases high-end modeling and environment work.
- Software Mastery: Expert-level command of Autodesk Maya and Substance Painter/Designer. Proficiency in Blender is also a core requirement for this role.
- Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of current-gen game development constraints, including vertex counts, draw calls, and the effective use of LODs.
- Academic Background: An artistic education to at least graduate level is required, ensuring a strong foundation in color theory, composition, and anatomy.
- Communication: Strong verbal, written, and visual communication skills are essential for collaborating within our multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable “Bonus” Skills
- World Building: Experience in environment landscape creation and set dressing to create lived-in, believable worlds.
- Shaders & Lighting: Technical prowess with real-time shader creation and a strong understanding of environment lighting.
- Composition: A keen eye for scene composition and the ability to use lighting and assets to guide the player’s eye.
- Illustration: Traditional 2D illustration skills are a significant benefit for early-stage conceptualization.
