This role is crucial for interpreting storyboards and visual development to create high-quality, production-ready environmental layouts for a 2D animated series.
🎯 Role Summary: Purpose & Deliverables
Purpose: To manage, mentor, and develop the Layout Team while overseeing the creation of all environmental layouts, ensuring they adhere to the project’s artistic vision, technical requirements, and production schedule.
Key Deliverables:
- Approved Background Layouts: Must be correct in perspective, scale, composition, and style for the animated production.
- Team Success: A well-functioning, developed, and motivated Layout Team.
Success Metrics:
- Layouts meet creative and managerial requirements within schedule.
- Timely approvals from the Art Director, Director, and Client.
- Demonstrable team development and sustainability.
✅ Key Responsibilities
1. Team Management & Mentorship:
- Leadership: Manage and develop the Layout Team, ensuring all drawings maintain the production’s style and quality.
- Feedback: Work one-on-one with Layout Artists, providing regular mentorship, clear direction, and constructive feedback.
- Communication: Effectively communicate production needs, artistic direction, and resolve technical or artistic questions.
- Morale: Foster an encouraging and engaging work environment and advocate for the team’s quality, morale, and schedule needs.
- Production Standard: Act as an exemplar by maintaining an inspiring quota of personal production work.
2. Production & Schedule Oversight:
- Tracking: Keep the layout production on schedule and track progress against goals and milestones (using tools like ShotGrid).
- Problem Solving: Anticipate and offer effective solutions for both technical and scheduling issues (e.g., managing sick days, missing assets).
- Collaboration: Partner with the Art Director and Director to solve complex technical challenges related to the visual environment.
3. Review & Approval (Quality Control):
- Review and/or approve final Layouts to ensure correct form, perspective, scale, layering, and readiness for BG paint.
- Approve and finalize Field Guides and Scaled Character Guides for use in scene planning and animation.
