The Role: CG Supervisor

The CG Supervisor is a pivotal leadership role within the production hierarchy. You act as the essential bridge between the 2D design intent and the final 3D picture. Reporting to the Director and Art Director on creative matters, and the Line Producer on scheduling and resources, you are responsible for the technical realization of the show’s creative vision.

This role requires a unique blend of high-level artistic sensibility and deep technical knowledge. You will oversee the end-to-end CG pipeline, ensuring that every department—from Asset Build to final Compositing—is aligned, efficient, and delivering work that meets our world-class standards.

Key Responsibilities & Day-to-Day Leadership

1. Technical Pipeline Oversight

  • End-to-End Management: Oversee the entire CG workflow, including Asset Build, Look Dev, Rigging, Layout, Animation, FX, Lighting, and Compositing.
  • Vision Translation: Lead the translation of 2D design language into fully realized 3D worlds, ensuring the final frames reflect the story requirements and tone set by the Director.
  • Standardization: Maintain regular communication with Department Heads (HoDs) to ensure alignment with studio practices and creative benchmarks.

2. Creative Problem Solving & Troubleshooting

  • Solution Architecture: Provide leadership to departmental Supervisors to tackle episodic challenges, identifying creative solutions that balance ambition with production scope.
  • Cross-Departmental Synergy: Troubleshoot publishing issues, modeling discrepancies, and tool requirements, ensuring a smooth transition between departments (e.g., from Layout to Animation).
  • Technical Constraints: Balance artistic desire with technical realities, such as render times and hardware constraints, without compromising final quality.

3. Team Management & Communication

  • Directing Team Liaison: Work closely with the Art Director to interpret the aesthetic vision and provide clear feedback to the crew to refine and clarify briefs.
  • Production Support: Support the Line Producer by scoping technical requirements and helping to schedule resources effectively across the episodic cycle.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and leadership to Leads and Supervisors, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and technical excellence.

4. Departmental Specifics

  • Assets & Look Dev: Ensure character models, surfacing, and rigs are delivered to the highest standards.
  • FX Integration: Collaborate with the FX Supervisor to integrate simulations and shaders as core storytelling elements.
  • Lighting & Comp: Partner with the Lighting and Compositing Supervisor to maintain visual consistency and storytelling rhythm throughout the show.
  • Environments: Facilitate the integration of Matte Paintings, projections, and set extensions into the 3D pipeline.

The “Must-Haves”

  • Artistic Excellence: A strong artistic eye with a deep understanding of composition, lighting, color theory, and cinematic storytelling.
  • Pipeline Expertise: Extensive, proven experience across the full CG pipeline on high-quality episodic series or feature productions.
  • Technical Mastery: Proficiency in industry-standard tools including Maya, Substance, Arnold/Redshift, and Blender.
  • Leadership Provenance: Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and the ability to align creative and technical objectives under tight schedules.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders and provide clear, actionable feedback to artists.
  • UK Regional Residency: This is a Regional Only role. Candidates must be based in the UK, but outside of the M25 area, as per specific project and client requirements.

Bonus Points

  • Feature Film Experience: Previous experience in the feature animation or VFX space.
  • Design-Led Stylization: Experience working on highly stylized or design-heavy animated series rather than strictly photorealistic content.
  • Technical Development: Knowledge of pipeline scripting or automation (Python, MEL) to help improve studio workflows.
  • DMP Integration: Specific expertise in Digital Matte Painting and environment projection workflows.
