Bardel Entertainment hiring CG Supervisor, Canada thumb

For over 35 years, Bardel Entertainment has stood as a cornerstone of the global animation industry. Based in the creative heart of Vancouver, we have evolved from a boutique craft studio into a powerhouse of technical and artistic innovation. At Bardel, we are grounded in the creative roots of animation, but our eyes are always on the horizon—pursuing fresh ideas, cutting-edge techniques, and emerging technologies. Our philosophy is simple: through creativity and collaboration, we can accomplish anything. We empower our teams to experiment, learn, and push the boundaries of what is possible in televised animation.

We are currently seeking a high-caliber CG Supervisor to oversee the creative and technical execution of an upcoming TV Featurette. This is a role for a “hands-on” leader—someone who can architect a high-level technical vision while being equally comfortable “on the box” solving complex production hurdles alongside their team.

The Mission: Technical Artistry at Scale

As a CG Supervisor at Bardel, you are the ultimate bridge between creative intent and technical reality. You will partner directly with Directors, Production Managers, and Department Leads to ensure that the visual style remains consistent, the quality remains elite, and the delivery milestones are met without friction.

This position is not purely administrative. We are looking for a technical maven who understands the intricacies of the animation pipeline from asset creation to final render. You will own the workflow, evolve the tooling, and act as the final line of defense against technical bottlenecks. Success in this role means pipelines run efficiently, artists feel empowered, and the final output exceeds the expectations of our global partners.

Key Responsibilities

1. Creative & Technical Direction

  • Visual Consistency: Ensure the aesthetic quality of CG animation is maintained across every shot and sequence, ensuring the Director’s vision is accurately translated to the screen.
  • Workflow Translation: Collaborate with Leads and Directors to convert high-level creative concepts into executable, robust technical workflows.
  • Cross-Departmental Integration: Oversee how assets flow between departments (e.g., from Rigging to Animation to Lighting) to ensure continuity and prevent “pipeline drift.”

2. Pipeline & Workflow Ownership

  • Workflow Evolution: Take full ownership of CG workflows, identifying areas for automation or efficiency improvements without sacrificing the final visual fidelity.
  • Risk Mitigation: Proactively identify potential risks in tooling, software versions, or infrastructure, and implement scalable solutions before they impact the schedule.
  • Data-Driven Improvement: Analyze production outcomes and post-mortems to refine workflows for future project phases or new studio ventures.

3. Hands-On Problem Solving

  • Prototyping: Work directly in Digital Content Creation (DCC) tools to prototype new shaders, lighting rigs, or simulation setups.
  • Direct Support: When the team hits a technical “wall,” you are expected to jump in and help solve the problem directly, demonstrating technical mastery rather than just delegating.

4. Leadership & Mentorship

  • Team Growth: Lead and mentor CG artists and Department Leads, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous learning.
  • Constructive Feedback: Provide clear, actionable, and constructive critiques that support both the immediate project needs and the long-term professional growth of the individuals.

Technical Requirements & Qualifications

To thrive at Bardel, you must possess a deep “domain expertise” in high-quality animated television production.

Experience & Proficiency

  • The Track Record: Proven experience as a CG Supervisor on high-end animated TV series or feature-length television specials.
  • DCC Mastery: Strong working knowledge of industry-standard tools. While we are tool-agnostic to a degree, deep proficiency in Maya, Houdini, or Blender is essential.
  • Domain Depth: You should have expert-level knowledge in at least one key domain—such as Assets, Simulation, or Lighting/Rendering (LRC)—with a broad understanding of how other departments function.
  • Adjacent Tools: Familiarity with compositing software like Nuke and surfacing tools like Mari or Adobe Substance is highly desirable.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are required to align cross-functional groups and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Self-Directed Growth: A proven ability to independently upskill (through testing, experimentation, and research) to stay ahead of industry trends.
  • Stakeholder Management: The ability to balance the creative desires of a Director with the logistical constraints provided by Production.

Compensation & Comprehensive Benefits

Bardel recognizes that the best talent requires the best support. Our compensation and benefits packages are designed to provide security and flexibility for our team members.

  • Financial Security: RRSP matching programs to help you plan for the future.
  • Flexible Hybrid Model: We empower our teams to work where they are most productive. While remote work is supported, we value intentional in-person time for collaboration and team building.
  • Vancouver Rush Weeks: To maintain team synergy, on-studio attendance in our beautiful Vancouver office is required during initial onboarding and our quarterly “Rush Weeks.”

What Success Looks Like

In this role, success is measured by the health of the pipeline and the morale of the team. You will know you are succeeding when:

  1. Teams are Unblocked: Artists spend more time creating and less time troubleshooting because you have paved the way with robust tools and clear guidance.
  2. Scalable Pipelines: The workflow holds up under the pressure of production “ramps” and handles complex sequences without breaking.
  3. Cultural Alignment: There is clear, proactive communication across all levels of the project, from junior artists to executive stakeholders.
  4. Artist Growth: The artists and leads under your supervision report feeling challenged, supported, and technically superior to when they started the project.
