The Role: A Convergence of Art and Technology
The role of a Senior Nuke Compositor / Compositing Supervisor at Alt.vfx is a multi-faceted position that sits at the final, critical stage of the visual effects pipeline. You are the architect of the final frame—the artist responsible for taking disparate elements from various departments and weaving them into a singular, believable reality.
In this role, you will be expected to handle the most “heroic” shots of a production while simultaneously providing the technical and creative leadership necessary to guide a department. We don’t just make images; we craft experiences that challenge the viewer’s perception of reality.
Key Responsibilities and Leadership Expectations
1. Departmental Leadership & Vision As a Supervisor, you aren’t just working on your own monitor. You are the beacon for the compositing team. You will:
- Mentor junior and mid-level artists, fostering an environment of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Conduct daily reviews (Dailies), providing clear, actionable, and constructive feedback to ensure every shot aligns with the Director’s and VFX Supervisor’s vision.
- Help define the 2D workflow for specific projects, identifying potential bottlenecks before they impact production.
2. High-End Creative Execution For the “Senior” aspect of the role, your hands-on skills must be beyond reproach. You will be responsible for:
- Executing complex and demanding shots that require advanced problem-solving and a deep understanding of the Nuke toolset.
- Achieving a seamless integration between live-action plates and high-end CG elements.
- Utilizing Nuke’s 3D environment and projection techniques to create depth and realism where none existed.
3. Quality Control & Technical Integrity The devil is in the details. At Alt.vfx, we pride ourselves on “photo-real” results. This involves:
- Maintaining a critical eye for light, shadow, grain, and edge work.
- Ensuring total consistency in color space and pipeline standards across an entire sequence.
- Expertly managing multi-channel EXRs and AOVs to maximize the flexibility of the composite without compromising render times.
Candidate Requirements: Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a candidate who lives and breathes visual effects. You should be someone who notices a mismatched black level in a cinema and feels a physical need to fix it.
Professional Experience
- Industry Tenure: You must have at least 8 years of experience working within a professional VFX studio environment, specifically focused on photo-realistic compositing for film or high-end commercials.
- Proven Track Record: Experience acting as a 2D Supervisor or Senior Lead is essential. You should be able to demonstrate a history of taking a sequence from concept to final delivery.
- Collaboration: A high level of experience working directly with VFX Supervisors, CG Leads, and Production Managers. You understand that VFX is a team sport.
Technical Proficiencies
- Nuke Mastery: You should know Nuke inside and out. This includes deep compositing, advanced keying, tracking, and the ability to build and share complex Gizmos.
- Color Science: You must possess a strong understanding of color pipelines, including ACES and various colorspace conversions.
- CG Logic: Expert knowledge in how CG is rendered. You should understand how to utilize AOVs (normals, depth, position passes, etc.) to recreate lighting and integrate elements flawlessly.
- Maya Familiarity: While this is a 2D-focused role, having a working knowledge of Maya is a significant advantage, allowing for better communication with the 3D department.
Soft Skills
- Pressure Management: The ability to remain calm and focused under the tight deadlines typical of high-end feature film and TVC production.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are required for leading teams and explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
