Detailed Role Responsibilities as Environment Artist
As an Environment Artist at Blazing Griffin, you are the architect of the player’s experience. Your role bridges the gap between raw gameplay mechanics and high-end visual fidelity, ensuring that every corner of the game world feels intentional, optimized, and immersive.
World Building & Artistic Vision
Working under the direct guidance of the Art Director, you will be responsible for delivering top-tier environments that push the boundaries of the project’s aesthetic. You will utilize a robust toolkit including ZBrush for organic sculpting, Substance Painter for detailed prop work, and Substance Designer for creating tileable, procedural materials that bring the world to life.
Level Blockouts & Layout Evolution
Collaboration with the Design Team is at the heart of this role. You will take initial gray-box level designs and transform them through every stage of production—from early layout and asset placement to final set dressing and lighting. Your goal is to ensure that the environment supports the gameplay flow while meeting the highest artistic standards.
Leadership & Collaborative Feedback
Blazing Griffin values a culture of growth. You will act as a mentor to junior artists, offering technical guidance and creative critiques to help them refine their skills. Furthermore, you are expected to be an active voice in the creative process, offering your own unique insights and suggestions to the Art Director and Producer during the planning stages.
Technical Documentation & Workflow Optimization
Efficiency is vital for building large-scale worlds. You will take a proactive role in identifying and documenting new workflows that streamline the environment pipeline. Whether it is refining a modular kit or establishing a new baking process, your documentation will ensure the entire team remains synchronized and efficient.
Concept Art Collaboration
Before a single polygon is placed, you will coordinate with Concept Artists. Your technical expertise will be crucial here, as you suggest amendments to designs that ensure they are not only visually stunning but also practical for 3D production and engine performance.
Required Skills & Qualifications for Environment Artist
Blazing Griffin is looking for a technical artist who understands that a great environment is a balance of beauty and performance.
- Extensive Industry Tenure: You must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in game development, with a track record of contributing to several shipped titles.
- Performance & Optimization: You have a deep understanding of how to build performant environments. You take personal ownership of maintaining technical budgets (draw calls, poly counts, texture memory) without sacrificing visual quality.
- Stylistic Mastery: While technical proficiency is required, we are specifically looking for an artist comfortable with stylized art directions. You understand how to interpret non-photorealistic concepts and bring them into a 3D space.
- Modular Thinking: You are an expert in modular asset creation. You know how to design kits that are highly reusable, allowing for the rapid construction of complex scenes while keeping the project’s footprint lean.
- Pipeline Literacy: You stay current with modern game art pipelines, including high-to-low poly baking, PBR material standards, and lighting setups within the Unity engine.
- Interdisciplinary Communication: You can speak the “language” of adjacent departments, working seamlessly with Tech Art to solve shader issues or Animation to ensure environment assets interact correctly with characters.

Blazing Griffin provides a supportive ecosystem designed to let creative professionals do their best work while maintaining a high quality of life.
