The Mission
At 22DOGS, the Editorial department is the heartbeat of the production pipeline. It is where the vision of the client meets the technical reality of the studio. The Head of Editorial will not only oversee the day-to-day mechanics of ingest, conform, and delivery but will also act as a structural architect, designing and refining the workflows that allow our artists to work at peak efficiency.
This role is unique: it requires a leader who is comfortable in the “trenches” of a complex conform while simultaneously possessing the management acumen to mentor a global team of VFX Editors. You will ensure that as we grow, our editorial standards remain world-class, consistent, and impeccably organized.
Detailed Key Responsibilities
1. Departmental Leadership & Mentorship
- Team Management: Lead, recruit, and mentor a distributed team of VFX Editors across our three main hubs. Conduct regular performance reviews and identify areas for professional growth.
- Resource Planning: Work with the Head of Production to allocate editorial resources across multiple concurrent shows, ensuring no single project is under-serviced during peak delivery windows.
- Culture Building: Foster a culture of precision, accountability, and collaboration within the editorial department.
2. Workflow Architecture & Standardization
- Pipeline Integration: Collaborate with the Pipeline and Technology teams to automate routine editorial tasks (e.g., automated ingest, slate generation, and delivery packaging).
- Best Practices: Define and document the “22DOGS Standard” for editorial workflows, ensuring that a project started in Milan can be seamlessly picked up by a team in Toronto.
- Consistency Oversight: Audit project structures across the studio to ensure versioning, naming conventions, and metadata tracking are handled with absolute uniformity.
3. High-Level Production Support
- Primary Point of Contact: Serve as the senior liaison between 22DOGS and client-side editorial teams. You will be the authoritative voice on all matters regarding turnovers, frame counts, and delivery specifications.
- Complex Troubleshooting: Step in to resolve high-priority technical issues, such as color space discrepancies, complex re-times, or difficult conforms that require senior-level intervention.
- VFX Supervision Alignment: Work closely with VFX Supervisors to ensure that internal reviews (dailies) and client presentations are formatted to the highest aesthetic and technical standards.
4. Hands-on Execution
- Project Involvement: While this is a leadership role, the Head of Editorial is expected to remain “active on the tools,” handling senior-level editorial tasks on flagship productions to lead by example and stay connected to the evolving technical landscape of the studio.
The Candidate Profile
Required Skills and Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who is as much a technician as they are a leader.
- Professional Experience: 10+ years in VFX or Post-Production, with at least 4 years in a Lead or Supervisory Editorial role on high-end episodic (Netflix, Apple TV+, HBO) or feature film productions.
- Software Mastery:
- Hiero: Expert-level knowledge for multi-track editorial and VFX timeline management.
- DaVinci Resolve: Advanced proficiency in conform, color management, and final delivery transcoding.
- Nuke Studio: Deep understanding of the integrated editorial-to-comp environment.
- Technical Fluency: A strong understanding of color science (ACES, OCIO), file formats (EXR, DPX, ProRes), and metadata management.
- Communication: Exceptional English communication skills. You must be able to explain technical editorial bottlenecks to non-technical producers and provide clear, constructive feedback to your team.
- Remote Leadership: Proven ability to manage a team and stay organized in a remote, distributed work environment across multiple time zones.
Technical “Nice to Haves”
- Nuke Knowledge: Basic ability to open scripts, check plates, and understand the 2D compositing workflow.
- Production Tracking: Experience with ShotGrid (Shotgun) or FTrack integration for editorial tracking.
- Scripting: Familiarity with Python or basic scripting to assist the pipeline team in developing editorial tools is a significant plus.
What We Offer
At 22DOGS, we recognize that our leadership team is the foundation of our success. We offer:
- A Global Platform: The chance to lead a department that services high-profile international productions for the world’s leading streamers and studios.
- True Ownership: You will have the authority to shape the department, choose your tools, and define the workflows that will carry the studio into its next phase of growth.
- Flexibility: We are a remote-first studio for this role, providing you with the trust and autonomy to manage your schedule while staying connected to our global hubs.
- A Collaborative Environment: Work alongside a passionate executive team that values technology and production efficiency as much as creative artistry.
- Competitive Executive Package: A salary and benefits package that reflects your seniority and the critical nature of this position.
Why Join 22DOGS?
The VFX landscape is changing, and 22DOGS is leading the charge by prioritizing a “production-driven” mindset. We don’t believe in silos; we believe that Editorial, Production, and Artistry must work in a perfect loop.
As the Head of Editorial, you are the guardian of that loop. You will be joining a studio that is large enough to handle “Flagship” projects but small enough for your individual contribution to be felt every single day. If you are tired of being a cog in a massive machine and want to be the person who builds the machine, 22DOGS is your new home.
Application Process
We are looking for a leader who is ready to start immediately or within a standard notice period.
How to Apply: Please submit your CV and a link to your credits/portfolio. In your application, please include a brief summary of a specific instance where you successfully optimized a complex editorial workflow or managed a difficult client turnover.
22DOGS is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All applications will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
The 22DOGS Editorial Standard
- Precision: Every frame matters. We pride ourselves on 100% accuracy in our turnovers and deliveries.
- Efficiency: We use technology to remove the “grunt work,” allowing our editors to focus on the story and the sequence.
- Communication: We are a “no-surprises” studio. Our Head of Editorial ensures everyone—from the artist to the client—is always on the same page.
