Nestled in the world’s most intriguing creative hubs, our workforce is united by a drive to achieve stunning creative visions while fostering an environment of innovation and enjoyment. This philosophy is supported by a significant strategic investment from Netflix in our pipeline, infrastructure, and global workforce. This partnership allows us to pioneer the next generation of visual effects and virtual production technology while continuing to collaborate with a diverse range of long-standing and new clients worldwide. We build worlds with exceptional craft, working hand-in-hand with our partners from the first concept to the final pixel.
Role Overview
As a Surfacing artist / Lookdev Artist at Eyeline Studios, you are responsible for the aesthetic “soul” of our CG assets. This role is fundamental to achieving the photorealistic standard for which the studio is known. You will be tasked with creating intricate, hyper-realistic textures and developing the look for a wide variety of assets—ranging from hard-surface mechanical props and vast environments to organic hero creatures and digital doubles.
This position requires a delicate balance between technical logic and artistic intuition. You must understand how light interacts with different physical materials in the real world and translate that knowledge into digital shading networks. Working on-site at our Hyderabad studio, you will operate as an integral part of our look development team, ensuring that every asset behaves predictably and beautifully under various lighting conditions.
Key Responsibilities
I. High-Fidelity Surfacing & Texturing
Texture Creation: Generate photorealistic textures for hero-level assets using a combination of hand-painting techniques and reference-based set photography.
Material Accuracy: Achieve a level of detail necessary for assets that will undergo extreme close-up scrutiny on the big screen, ensuring proper weight, age, and wear.
Reference Integration: Utilize physical reference materials and set photography to ensure digital assets perfectly match their real-world counterparts or the intended creative vision.
II. Look Development & Shading
Network Assembly: Build and manage complex shading networks that accurately simulate the physical properties of surfaces (diffuse, specularity, roughness, subsurface scattering, etc.).
Iterative Refinement: Tweak and polish the lookdev of assets to ensure they accurately match reference imagery across multiple lighting environments.
Asset Optimization: Ensure shading networks are optimized for rendering efficiency without compromising visual quality.
III. Collaborative Pipeline Participation
Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with the Modeling, Shading, and Lighting departments to ensure a seamless transition of assets through the pipeline.
Feedback Implementation: Actively participate in reviews and apply feedback from Supervisors and Leads to align the asset’s look with the project’s overall aesthetic.
Independent Execution: Take ownership of defined tasks and manage your time effectively to meet production milestones with minimal supervision.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Academic and Professional Standards
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, or a related field, or equivalent high-level professional experience.
Production History: Proven high-end production experience in visual effects specifically for live-action feature films or premium episodic television.
Artistic Foundation: A strong sense of color, composition, and a keen eye for observational detail.
Technical Skills & Software Expertise
Surfacing Core: Hands-on expertise in Foundry Mari is considered essential for this role.
DCC Proficiency: Working knowledge of Autodesk Maya is required.
Secondary Tools: Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop is expected; experience with ZBrush and Mudbox is highly advantageous.
Rendering & Lookdev: A clear and comprehensive understanding of color space (ACES/Linear), shading, lighting, and modern rendering methodologies (PBR).
Photography: Familiarity with digital photography and an understanding of how camera sensors capture light and texture.
Preferred “Plus” Skills
Software Versatility: Experience with 3ds Max, V-Ray, or Nuke.
Procedural Workflows: Familiarity with Substance Painter/Designer or procedural texturing in Houdini.
Anatomical Knowledge: An understanding of biological textures and subsurface scattering for organic hero creatures.
Leadership & Culture Expectations
Eyeline Studios is a “come as you are” environment. We value passion, craft, and the willingness to take creative risks. While this is an artist-level role, we expect our Surfacing/Lookdev Artists to:
Mentor and Support: Share techniques and knowledge with fellow artists to foster a collaborative and inclusive culture.
Problem Solve: Proactively identify technical issues within a shader or texture and propose efficient solutions.
Maintain Professionalism: Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding deadlines, technical hurdles, and creative progress.
Work Environment & Location
This is an on-site, full-time position at our Hyderabad, India studio.
Location Requirements: We are currently only considering applicants who are already based in Hyderabad or are willing to relocate to the city.
Collaborative Space: As a Lookdev Artist, you will thrive in our dynamic workspace, benefiting from face-to-face collaboration and the secure, high-bandwidth infrastructure of our studio environment.
The Eyeline Experience: Benefits & Perks
Industry-Leading Projects: The opportunity to work on high-profile global feature films and Netflix original content.
Technological Innovation: Access to cutting-edge virtual production tools and a robust pipeline supported by significant infrastructure investment.
Professional Growth: Collaborate with some of the industry’s most respected CG Supervisors and Leads in a studio that prioritizes artistic growth.
Vibrant Culture: Be part of a global team that celebrates diversity and pushes the boundaries of storytelling every day.
