The Role: Crafting the Final Image

As a Senior Compositor at Wētā FX, you are the final architect of the frame. Your mission is to take disparate elements—live-action plates, matte paintings, and complex computer-generated assets—and fuse them into a singular, believable reality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Seamless Integration: Mastery of light, color, and grain to ensure CG elements are indistinguishable from live-action footage.

  • Pipeline Innovation: Utilizing Nuke’s advanced Gizmos and Groups workflows to create efficient, shareable, and clean scripts.

  • Artistic Leadership: Interpreting feedback from VFX Supervisors and Compositing Supervisors to elevate the aesthetic quality of every shot.

  • Technical Excellence: Managing complex multi-channel EXR workflows and deep compositing data to maintain flexibility throughout the render process.

  • Mentorship: Setting a standard of excellence for mid-level and junior artists through well-structured scripts and proactive problem-solving.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are seeking artists who don’t just “finish” shots, but who understand the why behind the image.

  1. Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience working on high-end feature film visual effects.

  2. Technical Mastery: Profound knowledge of Nuke. You should be comfortable building complex tools and automated setups that streamline the 2D workflow.

  3. Scientific Foundation: A solid grasp of color science (ACES/OCIO), photography, and cinematography. You understand how lenses behave and how light interacts with different surfaces.

  4. Soft Skills: Resilience is key. The VFX industry is fast-paced; we value artists who maintain a positive attitude and communicate clearly under tight deadlines.

  5. Curiosity: A commitment to continuous learning. Whether it’s mastering a new proprietary tool or experimenting with AI-assisted compositing, you should always be looking for the “next big thing.”
