Continuous Growth: Gain access to premium online training platforms and our bespoke internal learning and development resources. We don’t just want you to do the job; we want you to hone your craft and master new techniques.

The Role: Senior FX Artist
As a Senior FX Artist at Outpost, you are a technical architect and a digital artist rolled into one. You will be responsible for creating complex, large-scale simulations that seamlessly integrate into live-action footage. From the subtle drift of atmosphere to the violent chaos of a cinematic explosion, your work provides the “wow” factor that audiences remember.
Beyond shot production, a Senior Artist at Outpost is a pillar of the department. You are expected to innovate by creating robust tools and workflows that benefit the entire team. Furthermore, your experience will be vital in mentoring junior and mid-level artists, helping them navigate technical hurdles and develop their artistic eyes.
Key Responsibilities
Simulation Excellence: Design and execute high-end FX simulations including fire, smoke, water, particles, and rigid body dynamics (RBD).
Hyper-Realism: Ensure all FX work meets the highest standards of photorealism, matching the lighting, scale, and physical properties of the plate photography.
Tool Development: Develop Houdini digital assets (HDAs) and procedural workflows to streamline production and ensure consistency across sequences.
Collaboration: Work closely with VFX Supervisors and CG Supervisors to interpret creative briefs and provide technical solutions for complex shots.
Mentorship: Act as a technical resource for the FX team, providing guidance on simulation setups and troubleshooting.
Pipeline Integration: Ensure all FX elements are delivered in a way that facilitates smooth lighting and compositing stages.
Essential Skills & Experience
We are seeking a candidate who lives and breathes Houdini, but who also understands the “why” behind every simulation.
Houdini Mastery: You should have an expert-level command of Houdini. Whether it’s Pyro, FLIP, Vellum, or POPs, you know how to manipulate data to get the desired result.
Artistic Sensibility: You possess a strong sense of timing, weight, and scale. You understand the physics of the real world and know how to bend them for cinematic effect.
VFX Pedigree: Significant experience working on high-level VFX projects (Feature Film or High-End Episodic). You understand the rigors and standards of a professional pipeline.
Problem-Solving: The ability to look at a complex creative request and break it down into a logical, technical execution plan.
Coding Knowledge: Proficiency in VEX or Python is a significant advantage, allowing you to go beyond the shelf tools and customize your setups.
