The Mission: Crafting Visual Chaos into Gameplay Clarity
Your mission at Ghost Ship Games involves taking ownership of the entire VFX lifecycle. Your day-to-day will be a mix of technical pipeline management and creative high-impact delivery.
Ghost Ship Games is not your typical game studio. Based in the vibrant heart of Copenhagen, we are a passionate, close-knit crew of over 50 gamers who believe in a “Co-op First” philosophy.
We are the architects behind Deep Rock Galactic, a title that has solidified its place in Steam’s Top 100 games. As we expand our horizons, we are looking for a visionary VFX Artist to take ownership of the visual effects that define our player experience.
At Ghost Ship, the role of a VFX Artist is pivotal. You won’t just be “making particles”; you will be designing the visual feedback that defines our “Dwarfcore” sci-fi aesthetic.
From the muzzle flash of a high-tech minigun to the catastrophic destruction of alien swarms, your work ensures that every action in a our production feels visceral and rewarding.
If you are a steady, skilled professional who enjoys turning creative chaos into structured, high-impact gameplay experiences, we have a pickaxe waiting for you.
II. The Ghost Ship Approach: Speed, Flexibility, and Prototyping
At Ghost Ship, we move away from the rigid, traditional pipelines found in larger AAA environments. We prioritize speed, flexibility, and rapid prototyping. We believe the best gameplay ideas emerge through iteration rather than over-documentation.
What this means for you as our VFX Artist: You will work in a pragmatic, fast-paced environment where collaboration across different crafts is the daily norm. We don’t look for “perfection” in the early stages; we value experimentation and the courage to explore new ideas. As the sole VFX Artist on the team, you will have the autonomy to organize your workflow and assess priorities based on the project’s immediate needs and visual impact.
III. Detailed Core Responsibilities
The VFX Artist at Ghost Ship takes full ownership of the visual effects lifecycle. Your impact will be felt from the initial prototype to the final polished asset.
1. Pipeline Ownership & Documentation
As our lead VFX Artist, you will maintain, develop, and enhance our VFX pipelines. You will take ownership of workflow documentation and identify optimizations across existing tools. At Ghost Ship Games, we value efficiency, and you will be the key to ensuring our visual effects run smoothly across all platforms.
2. Asset Cataloging & Management
A major part of this role involves “turning chaos into clarity.” You will establish and maintain a comprehensive catalogue of VFX assets. By ensuring the consistent use and re-use of assets, you help Ghost Ship Games maintain a cohesive visual language while keeping performance in check.
3. Gameplay-Driven VFX Creation
The core of your day-to-day work involves creating “cool effects” that support the flow of missions. Whether it’s explosions, grenades, or dwarfcore sci-fi technology, your work as a VFX Artist provides the essential feedback loop that makes combat feel impactful.
IV. About You: Professional Qualifications
We are seeking a steady, confident VFX Artist who is practical about their craft and thrives in a collaborative environment.
Experience: Prior professional experience as a VFX Artist on game projects is a must.
Engine Knowledge: Familiarity with Unreal Engine 5 is preferred. While experience with other engines is acceptable, you must be ready to adapt to the Ghost Ship Games tech stack.
Technical Systems: Experience with the Niagara VFX system is not strictly required but is considered a major advantage for any VFX Artist joining our crew.
Artistic Style: We prefer an interest in realism and science fiction. At Ghost Ship, we focus on space-dwarf technology and industrial sci-fi rather than magical or fantasy themes.
Self-Reliance: You are someone who doesn’t need a detailed task list. You assess and prioritize tasks based on the project’s creative direction.
V. Why Join the Ghost Ship Games Crew?
Joining GSG means becoming part of a studio that celebrates its artists and its community.
Work-Life Balance: Flexible hours with remote options for Fridays and two additional days per month.
Financial Security: Competitive salary, annual bonus, and a strong pension plan.
Health & Family: Full health/dental insurance, paid parental leave, and five weeks of vacation plus five extra days.
Social Culture: A spacious office in Gothersgade with catered lunch and plenty of social “shenanigans.”
VI. Application & Interview Process
At Ghost Ship Games, we value your time. No cover letter is needed—just focus on your CV and your portfolio.
The Portfolio Requirement
Your portfolio is the most critical part of your application to Ghost Ship Games. As a VFX Artist, we want to see particle work specifically highlighting:
Gun effects (1st and 3rd person)
Explosions and grenades
Realistic or Sci-Fi designs
Interview Rounds
Round 1 (30 mins): A conversation with the Art Director, Technical Artist, and Animator to discuss your skills and workflow.
The Case: If you move forward, you will work on a short case-style question to present in the next round.
Round 2 (1 hour): A deep dive with the Game Director and P&C team to understand how you would collaborate within the Ghost Ship Games team.
Conclusion: Grab Your Pickaxe!
At Ghost Ship Games, we believe that every VFX Artist has the potential to define the look and feel of our next big expedition. If you have the practical approach, the technical skill, and the passion for sci-fi, we want to hear from you.
