Cubic Games, a powerhouse in the mobile gaming industry and a key studio within the GDEV holding, is seeking a visionary VFX Artist to join our elite development team. As the creators of Pixel Gun 3D—a global phenomenon with over 5 million monthly active users—we are now channeling our expertise into an unannounced, cross-platform shooter poised to redefine stylized combat.

Cubic Games is looking for a technical artist who doesn’t just “make particles,” but who understands the visceral language of feedback, the rhythm of a first-person shooter, and the delicate balance between high-fidelity visuals and mobile optimization. If you thrive in an environment where expertise is valued over bureaucracy and where your work directly shapes the player experience, Cubic Games is your next professional home.

The Opportunity: Why Cubic Games?

At Cubic Games, we believe that visual effects are the soul of a shooter. They communicate power, danger, and progression. Joining this project means:

  1. Direct Impact: We operate with a “no-checkboxes” philosophy. You aren’t just a cog in a machine; you are an architect of the game’s feel.

  2. Technological Maturity: We utilize the latest Unity features (URP, VFX Graph) to push the boundaries of what is possible on cross-platform hardware.

  3. Stability & Growth: Benefit from the backing of GDEV while maintaining the agile, passionate spirit of a specialized studio.

  4. Data-Driven Artistry: We combine creative intuition with player data to ensure our effects resonate with millions of users globally.

Core Responsibilities

1. Creative Execution & Stylization

  • Conceptualize and execute stylized, expressive VFX that align with a unique, unannounced art style.

  • Design a wide array of effects including high-impact weapon fire, environmental hazards, character abilities, enemy deaths, and tactile UI feedback.

  • Ensure all effects maintain a “readability first” approach, allowing players to navigate intense, fast-paced combat without visual clutter.

2. Technical Integration & Pipeline Development

  • Full integration of assets within Unity3D, utilizing both VFX Graph for complex simulations and Particle System (Shuriken) for legacy/mobile-optimized needs.

  • Collaborate with the Tech Art team to design and implement complex setups that combine particles, custom shaders, and skeletal animations.

  • Build and maintain procedural templates and reference libraries to ensure visual consistency across the entire project.

3. Cross-Platform Optimization

  • Master the art of “High-End Visuals on Low-End Hardware.” You will be responsible for optimizing overdraw, vertex counts, and draw calls for Android and iOS.

  • Manage memory footprints and battery consumption constraints without sacrificing the “wow” factor.

  • Implement LOD (Level of Detail) systems for VFX to ensure seamless performance from high-end PCs to budget smartphones.

4. Prototyping & R&D

  • Develop rapid prototypes to test gameplay mechanics and visual “feel” early in the iteration cycle.

  • Stay at the forefront of industry trends by analyzing competitor styles and researching new real-time simulation techniques.

Required Qualifications

Professional Experience

  • 3+ Years of Industry Experience: A proven track record of creating VFX for stylized titles, preferably within the FPS or TPS genres.

  • Shipped Titles: At least one commercially released project where you held significant responsibility for the VFX pipeline.

Technical Mastery

  • Unity3D Expert: Deep proficiency in Unity URP, VFX Graph, and the standard Particle System.

  • Shaders: High-level experience with Amplify Shader Editor or Shader Graph.

  • 3D Modeling: Competency in Blender (or Maya/3ds Max) for creating custom meshes, UV unwrapping, and basic rigging for effects.

  • 2D Artistry: Proficiency in Photoshop for texture painting, sprite sheet creation, and masking.

Artistic Foundations

  • Principles of Motion: A deep understanding of timing, weight, physics, and dynamics (fragmentation, inertia, and mass).

  • Color Theory: Ability to use color and contrast to guide the player’s eye and communicate gameplay-critical information.

  • Hand-Drawn Skills: Capability to create hand-drawn elements or stylized flipbooks to give effects a “boutique,” non-procedural feel.

Preferred “Nice-to-Have” Skills

  • Code Proficiency: The ability to write HLSL/Cg shaders from scratch without a node-based editor.

  • Advanced Simulation: Experience with Houdini or EmberGen for generating high-end fluid or smoke data.

  • Animation: Skills in traditional frame-by-frame animation or advanced flipbook generation.

  • Niche Passion: A genuine love for Pixel Art or Voxel Art aesthetics.

  • Autonomy: The ability to take a feature from a one-sentence concept to a fully integrated, optimized in-game asset.

  • Equipment: Provision of high-end hardware (workstations, tablets) tailored to your specific workflow needs.

Application Process

  1. Initial Screen: A brief conversation with our recruitment team to discuss your background and expectations.

  2. Portfolio Review: Our Lead Artists will evaluate your reel. Note: Technical breakdowns (showing layers, shaders, or node graphs) are highly encouraged.

  3. Technical Interview: A deep dive into your Unity workflow, optimization strategies, and artistic philosophy.

  4. Final Meet: A culture-fit interview with the project leadership.
