Role Overview: Impact & Responsibilities

As a Lighting Artist, your mission is to bring depth, mood, and atmosphere to 3D scenes. You aren’t just placing lights; you are a digital cinematographer. You will work at the intersection of various departments, ensuring that the work of Modelers, Texture Artists, and Lookdev Artists is showcased under the best possible light.

1. Artistic Vision & Scene Development

  • Atmospheric Storytelling: Develop lighting setups that enhance the project’s narrative, focusing on mood, depth, and character focus through the expert use of color theory and shadow.

  • Interpretation: Translate concept art, color keys, and director references into high-quality 3D lighting environments.

  • Visual Readability: Ensure that every shot is optimized for composition, ensuring character silhouettes and focal points are clear and compelling.

2. Technical Optimization & Rendering

  • Pipeline Efficiency: Optimize complex lighting setups to ensure efficient render times without compromising the visual fidelity required for feature or episodic content.

  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve technical rendering issues such as noise, artifacts, sampling errors, and exposure inconsistencies.

  • Handoff Management: Prepare and organize lighting scenes and render passes for a seamless transition to the Compositing team, adhering to strict naming conventions and file structures.

3. Collaborative Integration

  • Cross-Departmental Synergy: Work closely with the Look Development and Texture teams to ensure shaders react accurately to lighting setups.

  • Feedback Implementation: Actively participate in reviews and apply feedback from Supervisors and Directors with agility, ensuring all deadlines are met with a positive, solution-oriented attitude.

Required Qualifications & Technical Skills

We are looking for an artist who balances a keen aesthetic eye with a robust technical foundation.

  • Experience: Proven professional experience as a Lighting Artist in 3D animation, VFX, or a related field (e.g., game cinematics).

  • Software Proficiency: * Mastery of Autodesk Maya, Blender, or Unreal Engine.

    • Familiarity with industry-standard render engines (e.g., Arnold, V-Ray, or Redshift).

  • Cinematic Foundations: A strong understanding of classical lighting principles, color theory, composition, and the fundamentals of cinematography.

  • Technical Breadth: A basic understanding of shading, texturing, and look development to better facilitate the lighting process.

  • Attention to Detail: An uncompromising eye for visual aesthetics and the ability to maintain consistency across long sequences.

Behaviors & Competencies

  • Collaborative Mindset: The ability to work within a diverse team environment and share technical knowledge to improve the overall pipeline.

  • Time Management: Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively under production pressure.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly when explaining technical lighting choices to non-technical stakeholders.

We want to see the world through your lens.
