Company Overview: The Blum Studios Ethos

At Blum Studios, we believe that the soul of a game lies in the details. We are an independent development studio dedicated to pushing the technical and artistic boundaries of interactive entertainment. Our team is a collective of “Squirrels”—inquisitive, proactive, and deeply collaborative professionals who thrive on solving the unique challenges of next-gen development.

With locations worldwide, we provide a multicultural, inclusive environment where artistic excellence is the standard, and every team member’s contribution is a vital part of the final player experience.

Role Overview

The Prop Artist is responsible for the creation of high-quality 3D assets that populate our gaming environments. You will work at the intersection of aesthetic beauty and technical optimization. Your primary mission is to take 2D concepts or real-world photo references and translate them into game-ready, three-dimensional assets that adhere to a Physically Based Rendering (PBR) workflow.

This role requires a diverse skillset; you must be as comfortable sculpting organic, soft-surface forms as you are modeling precise, hard-surface mechanical objects. At Blum Studios, we don’t just “make props”; we craft the interactive elements that make our digital worlds feel lived-in, tangible, and real.

Key Responsibilities

1. High-End Asset Creation

  • Modeling Excellence: Craft compelling and visually outstanding next-gen assets, varying from stylized items to hyper-realistic machinery.

  • Surface Diversity: Execute high-poly and low-poly modeling for both hard-surface (tools, vehicles, weapons) and soft-surface/organic (foliage, fabrics, debris) assets.

  • Texture & Material Mastery: Author high-fidelity textures and complex materials that utilize the PBR pipeline to ensure realistic light response and material definition.

2. Technical Implementation & Optimization

  • Engine Integration: Independently integrate assets, textures, and material instances into game engines such as Unreal Engine 5 or Unity, ensuring all shaders and LODs (Levels of Detail) are correctly configured.

  • Performance Balancing: Maintain a strict balance between cinematic-quality visuals and the technical constraints of the game engine. You will be responsible for optimizing mesh density, texture memory, and draw calls without compromising the artistic vision.

  • Collision & Physics: Set up appropriate collision meshes and technical parameters to ensure props interact correctly with the game’s physics engine.

3. Collaborative Production

  • Creative Alignment: Work in close proximity with the Lead Artist and Art Director to ensure all assets align with the project’s overarching visual style and quality bar.

  • Reference Utilization: Diligently work from provided concept art and photo references to ensure historical or stylistic accuracy.

  • Pipeline Participation: Contribute to the refinement of the asset pipeline by documenting workflows and identifying new tools that can enhance production efficiency.

Qualifications & Technical Skills

Professional Requirements

  • Industry Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in game development, with at least one shipped title or a portfolio of equivalent professional quality.
  • Artistic Eye: Strong foundational skills in form, silhouette, color theory, and surface wear/weathering.
  • Collaboration: A proven ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, accepting and implementing feedback with a proactive attitude.

Technical Proficiencies

  • Modeling Tools: Expert-level knowledge of industry-standard software, specifically 3ds Max, Maya, and ZBrush.
  • Texturing Suite: Mastery of the Substance Suite (Painter/Designer) and Photoshop for PBR texture creation.
  • Baking Skills: Exceptional skill in baking high-to-low poly maps (Normal, AO, Curvature, etc.) using Marmoset Toolbag or similar software.
  • Game Engines: Deep familiarity with Unreal Engine or Unity pipelines, specifically regarding asset importing and material editor navigation.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Communication Excellence: The ability to articulate technical challenges and creative solutions clearly to both artistic and non-artistic stakeholders.

  • Time Management: A self-motivated individual who can prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Knowledge Sharing: A willingness to provide mentorship to junior artists and contribute to a culture of continuous learning.

Benefits & Perks

Blum Studios is committed to fostering a healthy and creative workspace for our artists:

  • Competitive Compensation: Top-tier salary packages with performance-based bonus structures.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents.
