Studio Overview: The Blum Studios Vision
At Blum Studios, we believe that every legendary gaming experience begins with a single, powerful image. We are an independent powerhouse that joins forces with the world’s most ambitious developers and publishers to forge immersive universes. Our culture is built on the pillars of being inquisitive, proactive, and collaborative. We don’t just build games; we create living, breathing worlds. With a global footprint, we offer a diverse environment where your artistic voice is essential to our collective success.
Role Overview
The Concept Artist at Blum Studios is the visual architect of our projects. You are responsible for the “First Look”—the initial spark that transforms a line of dialogue or a gameplay mechanic into a tangible reality. You will work at the intersection of imagination and execution, providing the blueprint that our 3D Modelers, Environment Artists, and Animators will follow. We are looking for an artist who possesses a “narrative eye”—someone who understands that an environment is not just a backdrop, but a silent storyteller.
Key Responsibilities
1. Visual Development & Ideation
- Holistic Concepting: Develop credible, high-quality concept art for a wide array of assets, including primary characters, creature designs, atmospheric environments, and intricate props.
- Inspirational Pitching: Contribute to the generation of inspirational concept and prototype art intended for pitching new game scenarios and internal IPs to stakeholders.
- Narrative Design: Infuse every design with “lore-friendly” details that suggest a history and function beyond the immediate visual.
2. Color, Lighting, and Mood
- Atmospheric Studies: Create comprehensive color scripts and lighting studies to establish the mood, tone, and emotional arc of specific game levels or cinematic sequences.
- Paint-overs: Provide detailed screenshot paint-overs of in-engine builds to guide the character and environment teams in achieving the desired look, feel, and lighting response.
3. Production Support
- Technical Orthographics: Generate clear, detailed callouts and turnarounds (front, back, side views) to ensure 3D artists have the necessary information to maintain design integrity during the modeling phase.
- Iterative Refinement: Work closely with Art Directors to refine visual styles through multiple iterations based on creative feedback and technical constraints.
Qualifications & Technical Skills as Concept Artist
Professional Requirements
- Robust Portfolio: A world-class portfolio demonstrating mastery in design, composition, color theory, and perspective. We look for work that showcases both “Blue Sky” imagination and grounded, functional design.
- Industry Experience: A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in game development, film, or a related entertainment industry.
- Design Fundamentals: A strong understanding of silhouette, value hierarchy, and visual storytelling.
Technical Proficiencies
- 2D Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Photoshop. Familiarity with other contemporary digital 2D programs is highly valued.
- 3D Integration (Bonus): Proficiency in using basic 3D block-outs (using Blender, ZBrush, or Maya) to establish perspective and lighting for complex concepts is a significant plus.
Leadership & Collaborative Expectations
Collaborative Mindset: At Blum Studios, we prioritize a “no-ego” environment. You must have an effective team-communication style and a willingness to share knowledge.
Self-Motivation: You are a proactive individual who can manage your own schedule, meet project deadlines, and explore multiple solutions to a design problem with minimal supervision.
Feedback Integration: You possess the ability to take critical feedback and translate it into actionable artistic improvements.
Benefits and Perks
Blum Studios is dedicated to the holistic well-being of our “Squirrels”:
- Competitive Compensation: Market-leading salary structures and performance-based bonuses.
- Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance packages.
- Creative Growth: Annual stipends for professional development, including art workshops and industry conferences.
- Work-Life Balance: Generous Paid Time Off (PTO), inclusive parental leave, and flexible hybrid work arrangements.
