Our Portfolio of Excellence: Our artists have been the invisible hands behind some of the most iconic imagery in modern cinema and television. Our credit list includes:

  • Television: Game of Thrones (Season One), the complete saga of Peaky Blinders, and many more.

  • Feature Film: Skyfall, The Northman, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, and Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu.

Role Overview

The Roto/Prep Artist at BlueBolt is tasked with the essential “invisible” work that makes high-end VFX possible. Your primary responsibility is to provide the Compositing department with clean plates and accurate mattes. This involves complex rotoscoping, plate preparation, and digital painting to remove unwanted elements from shots.

You will act as a bridge between production and final delivery, ensuring that every edge is perfect and every clean-up is undetectable. This role requires a blend of extreme patience, technical logic, and an artistic soul. You will be expected to thrive in a fast-paced environment, moving between diverse projects while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Execution & Pipeline

  • Rotoscoping: Create highly accurate, articulate mattes for live-action characters and objects using Nuke.

  • Digital Prep & Paint: Perform complex “clean-up” tasks, including the removal of tracking markers, rigs, wires, and unwanted background elements.

  • Plate Restoration: Reconstruct background textures, grain patterns, and lighting cues to ensure “invisible” integration.

  • Nuke Integration: Manage scripts efficiently, ensuring that roto shapes and paint nodes are optimized for the Compositing team’s workflow.

Artistic Quality Control

  • Edge Integrity: Maintain consistent and believable edges, accounting for motion blur and depth of field.

  • Color & Composition: Utilize a strong understanding of color theory and light behavior to ensure that prep work matches the original plate’s characteristics.

  • Consistency: Ensure that work remains stable across multiple frames, avoiding “chatter” or artifacts in the final output.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Workflow Reporting: Regularly report progress to the VFX Supervisor or Lead Compositor, ensuring that deadlines are met and expectations are managed.

  • Direction & Feedback: Actively participate in dailies, taking constructive criticism and technical direction to refine shots to the Lead’s specifications.

  • Troubleshooting: Identify technical issues within a shot—such as difficult camera moves or complex lighting—and propose logical, efficient solutions.

Required & Preferred Qualifications

Professional Requirements

  • Experience: Previous experience working within a recognized VFX facility is required. Direct experience in high-end film or episodic television is strongly preferred.

  • Legal Status: All applicants must currently reside in the UK and possess the legal right to work in the UK. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this specific role.

Technical Skills

  • Nuke Proficiency: A solid working knowledge of Foundry’s Nuke is essential. You should be comfortable with Bezier/B-Spline shapes, the RotoPaint node, and basic tracking within the software.

  • Artistic Talent: A demonstrable eye for detail, specifically regarding the physics of light, color matching, and the nuances of film grain.

  • Logical Troubleshooting: The ability to deconstruct a complex shot and determine the most efficient method for extraction or clean-up.

Soft Skills

  • Motivation: A self-starter attitude with the drive to improve skills and move up the VFX ladder.

  • Communication: Clear, concise verbal and written communication skills are vital for our collaborative studio environment.

  • Attention to Detail: An almost obsessive focus on the “small things” that can make or break a high-resolution frame.

Leadership Expectations

While this is an artist-level role, BlueBolt values “leadership at every level.” We expect our Roto/Prep artists to:

  • Own the Shot: Take full responsibility for the quality and delivery of assigned tasks.

  • Team Orientation: Support fellow artists by sharing tips and maintaining a positive, solution-focused attitude during high-pressure delivery periods.

  • Professionalism: Represent the BlueBolt brand through a dedicated work ethic and a respectful approach to the collaborative process.

Benefits and Perks

  • Hybrid Work Environment: Enjoy the best of both worlds with a balance of in-studio collaboration in London and remote flexibility.

  • Award-Winning Culture: Work alongside some of the industry’s most respected Leads and Supervisors in a friendly, non-hierarchical atmosphere.

  • Career Progression: BlueBolt is a growing company with a history of promoting from within. We provide a pathway for Roto/Prep artists to transition into Junior Compositor roles.

  • Prime Projects: Gain credits on some of the most anticipated films and series in the global market.

  • Social & Collaborative: Join a “happy team” that values social interaction and a supportive studio life.
