Role Overview
We are looking for a Mid-Level Compositor who possesses a refined eye for detail and a deep understanding of the photorealism required in modern cinema. This is not just a role for someone who can “use the tools”; we need an artist who understands the physics of light, the behavior of lenses, and the nuances of color integration.
As a Mid-Level Compositor at AfterZ, you will be responsible for taking shots from the initial plate through to the final deliverable. You should be comfortable working on complex shots that involve a mix of live-action, 2D elements, and 3D renders, ensuring that every layer feels cohesive and “of the same world.”
Detailed Responsibilities
1. Seamless Integration & Artistry
Your primary goal is to combine disparate elements into a singular, believable image. This involves:
- Matching grain, noise, and motion blur across all layers.
- Ensuring light-wraps, shadows, and reflections behave according to the physics of the scene.
- Maintaining consistent color grading and black/white points across a sequence of shots.

2. Technical Workflow Management
- Keying & Extraction: High-level mastery of blue/green screen extraction, including dealing with fine hair detail, semi-transparent objects, and motion-blurred edges.
- Tracking & Stabilization: Proficient use of 2D, planar (Mocha), and 3D tracking data to ensure all elements are rock-solid within the frame.
- CG Integration: Working with multi-pass EXR files to fine-tune lighting, specular, and depth-of-field effects on 3D assets.
3. Independence & Problem Solving
- Taking ownership of assigned shots and seeing them through to client approval.
- Proactively identifying technical issues in a plate or script and proposing creative solutions.
- Optimizing heavy Nuke scripts to ensure they are render-farm friendly and easy for other artists to navigate.
4. Collaboration & Quality Control
- Participating in “dailies” and taking constructive feedback from Supervisors to iterate on shots.
- Assisting in the development of studio-wide gizmos or templates to improve efficiency.
- Helping to mentor junior artists and interns by sharing best practices and workflow shortcuts.
Technical Requirements & Skills
- Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Foundry Nuke. Familiarity with Silhouette for advanced paint/prep and Mocha for tracking is essential.
- Color Science: A solid understanding of linear workflows, ACES color space, and the importance of LUTs (Look-Up Tables).
- Experience: A proven track record in a VFX pipeline for Feature Films, OTT Series (Netflix, Amazon, etc.), or high-end commercial work.
- Educational Background: A degree or diploma in Fine Arts, Animation, or Visual Effects is preferred, though a stellar showreel remains the primary selection criteria.
Why Join AfterZ VFX Studio?
Kolkata is rapidly becoming a burgeoning hub for post-production in India, and AfterZ is at the forefront of this movement. We offer a work-life balance that is often missing in larger hubs like Mumbai or Bangalore, without compromising on the quality of the projects.
The Work: You will contribute to high-visibility projects spanning domestic and international markets.
The Culture: We foster a growth-focused environment where learning is continuous. We host weekly “Deep Dive” sessions to discuss the latest VFX techniques and industry trends.
The Growth: We prioritize internal promotions. We are looking for artists who want to grow into Lead and Supervisory roles as the studio expands.
