Role Overview

As a 3D Animator, you are the primary actor behind the screen. You will take the groundwork laid by the Layout and Rigging departments and transform static assets into dynamic characters that drive the narrative forward. This role requires a sophisticated balance of technical software mastery and a deep, intuitive understanding of human (and creature) mechanics. You will be expected to deliver “feature-level” quality on episodic timelines, maintaining the highest standards of the Brown Bag Films brand.

Key Responsibilities

1. Character Performance & Narrative Execution

• Technical Acting: Craft expressive and compelling character performances that align with the Director’s vision and the specific “voice” of the show.

• Principles of Animation: Apply the 12 core principles—timing, staging, squash and stretch, and solid drawing—to every frame to ensure weight and believability.

• Interpretation: Translate 2D storyboards and animatics into high-fidelity 3D motion, ensuring that the emotional subtext of the scene is preserved in the transition.

2. Pipeline Collaboration & Integration

• Departmental Liaison: Work closely with the Rigging Department to provide feedback on character skeletons and with the Lighting/Comp teams to ensure your shots are “render-ready.”

• Consistency: Maintain a unified style across multiple episodes. You must be able to “match the move” of other animators to ensure character continuity.

• Asset Management: Ensure all files are optimized, correctly named, and integrated into the studio’s proprietary pipeline without technical errors.

3. Review, Iteration, and Mentorship

• Daily Reviews: Present work during “Dailies” and “Rounds,” providing clear context for your creative choices.

• Feedback Implementation: Receive and apply constructive criticism from Animation Leads and Directors with speed and professional grace.

• Problem Solving: Proactively identify potential technical hurdles in a shot and suggest workflow improvements to the Animation Lead.

Technical Skills & Software Proficiency

To succeed in this role, you must be a “power user” of industry-standard creative suites:

• Primary Tools: Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Maya is mandatory. Proficiency in Blender for character animation is also highly valued.

• The Mechanics of Motion: A mastery of body mechanics—understanding center of gravity, torque, and physical momentum.

• Facial Animation: Deep knowledge of facial topology and phonemes to create realistic lip-sync and nuanced emotional micro-expressions.

• Real-Time Workflows (Plus): Experience with Unreal Engine for real-time rendering or cinematics is a significant advantage as we evolve our pipeline.

• Rigging Literacy: A basic understanding of how rigs are constructed so you can troubleshoot minor issues independently.

Required & Preferred Qualifications

• Experience: A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a production environment (TV Series, Feature Film, or AAA Game Cinematics).

• The Reel: A strong, curated portfolio or demo reel that demonstrates a range of styles—from broad “cartoony” squash-and-stretch to subtle, realistic acting.

• Education: No formal degree is required. We value your artistic output and professional track record above all else.

• Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills. You must be able to articulate your creative process and work harmoniously in a diverse, multicultural team.

• Resilience: The ability to remain focused and productive under tight deadlines while maintaining a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
