Based in Hillsboro, Oregon, LAIKA Studios is a community of artists, engineers, and dreamers dedicated to the craft of “hand-made” cinema augmented by cutting-edge technology. We believe that every character has a soul and every story deserves a unique visual language. Our films are celebrated for their intricate detail, emotional depth, and bold aesthetic choices. At the heart of this success is our Character Design department—the architects of the heroes, villains, and creatures that inhabit our worlds. We foster an environment of radical collaboration, where tradition meets innovation, and where every member of the team, from interns to principal designers, contributes to a legacy of cinematic excellence. We invite you to join us in our pursuit of creating characters that resonate across generations. Role Overview The Character Design Intern is a pivotal developmental role within our pre-production and production pipeline. This is not a passive learning experience; it is a “hands-on” immersion into the creative heart of a feature-length production. Working under the direct supervision of the Principal Character Designer, the intern will assist in the high-level exploration, iterative design, and technical finalization of characters that will eventually be translated into physical puppets. The primary objective of this internship is to provide a comprehensive look at the life cycle of character creation. You will be tasked with translating abstract narrative concepts into tangible visual designs. This role requires a high degree of artistic flexibility, as you will be expected to adapt to the specific “house style” of a production while injecting your own unique creative perspective. From anatomical research to the creation of expression sheets that inform the facial animation of our puppets, your work will directly impact the visual development of our upcoming projects. Key Responsibilities and Production Tasks The responsibilities of the Character Design Intern are multifaceted, spanning from initial blue-sky research to the final technical deliverables required for the puppet fabrication pipeline. I. Conceptual Exploration & Research Creative Investigation: Conduct deep-dive research into human and animal anatomy, historical costume design, and diverse drawing styles to inform early character concepts. Personality Development: Explore character design elements that define a character’s attitude, personality traits, and psychological depth through silhouette and posture. Iterative Sketching: Generate a high volume of “loose” exploration sketches to help directors and lead designers narrow down the visual direction of a character. II. 2D Design & Technical Specification Character Turnarounds: Assist in the creation of detailed 2D turnarounds (front, back, and profile views) that serve as blueprints for the physical puppet builders. Expression Sheets: Develop comprehensive expression and “mouth-shape” sheets to define the range of emotional performance a character must achieve. Posing & Dynamics: Produce dynamic action poses that showcase how a character moves through space and interacts with their environment. Color Blocking: Assist in the application of color theory to character designs, creating color blocks and digital “character paints” to establish skin tones, textures, and costume palettes. III. Pipeline Collaboration Cross-Departmental Synergy: Create design elements (faces, body shapes, hairstyles, and hands) that provide clear instructions to the Puppet Fabrication and Armature departments. Feedback Integration: Participate in formal review sessions and dailies. You must demonstrate the ability to take critical direction and incorporate director notes with speed and professional grace. Schedule Adherence: Effectively prioritize daily tasks to meet the rigorous deadlines established by the production calendar. Required and Preferred Qualifications Minimum Academic and Professional Standards Educational Status: Currently enrolled as a Senior at an accredited college or university, or a recent graduate within 12 months of the program start date. Discipline: Major or concentration in Animation, Film, Fine Arts, Illustration, or a related creative field. Drawing Excellence: Exceptional foundational drawing skills, with a specific mastery of character construction, weight, and volume. Software Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop as the primary tool for digital design and painting. Core Competencies (The “Soft Skills”) Stylistic Versatility: The ability to move beyond your personal drawing “comfort zone” and adapt to the unique aesthetic requirements of a specific film. Anatomical Foundation: A solid understanding of human and animal anatomy, including facial musculature and skeletal structure. Collaborative Spirit: The ability to work both independently on deep-focus tasks and collaboratively within a high-pressure team environment. Detail Orientation: A meticulous approach to turnarounds and technical drawings where a single misplaced line could impact the practical build of a puppet. Physical Demands & Work Environment The Character Design Intern role is performed on-site at our studio to ensure seamless collaboration with the design and fabrication teams. Physical Activity: While primarily a sedentary design role, the employee will occasionally need to walk, stand, and navigate a bustling studio environment. Equipment Use: Constant use of digital drawing tablets and standard office computer equipment. Visual Acuity: The role requires exceptional close vision and the ability to distinguish subtle color variations and focus adjustments during the design process. Environment: Typical studio/office conditions with moderate noise levels and indoor temperature fluctuations. LAIKA Studios is a community of dreamers, builders, and engineers dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the cinematic medium. By seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technological advancements, we create immersive worlds and characters that resonate with audiences of all ages. LAIKA Studios culture is built on a foundation of precision, creative bravery, and radical collaboration. We believe that every frame of a film is a testament to the dedication of our artists and technicians. From the smallest mechanical joint in a character’s hand to the expansive vistas of a miniature set, our work is defined by an unparalleled attention to detail. As we embark on our next feature-length production, we are looking for an Armature Intern who is eager to contribute to this legacy of excellence and gain hands-on experience in one of the most specialized departments in the animation industry. Role Overview The Armature Intern position is a rare opportunity to step inside the “engine room” of stop motion animation. The armature serves as the skeleton of the puppet—the essential mechanical framework that allows an animator to manipulate a character with the nuance and range of a living being. This role is not merely observational; it is a high-functioning production internship where you will be integrated into the workflow of our Armature and Rigging departments. Under the mentorship of world-class armature builders and mechanical engineers, the intern will learn the intricate processes involved in creating these complex miniature machines. You will move beyond theory and into the practical application of metal fabrication, precision assembly, and mechanical design. This role requires a unique individual who possesses the steady hands of a jeweler, the technical mind of a machinist, and the creative soul of a sculptor. Key Responsibilities & Production Duties The Armature Intern is responsible for supporting the manufacturing pipeline through a variety of technical and organizational tasks. Success in this role is defined by accuracy, patience, and the ability to work within a highly collaborative production ecosystem. I. Technical Fabrication & Assembly Mechanical Construction: Build accurate armatures and sub-assemblies directly from complex mechanical drawings. This requires the ability to interpret blueprints and translate 2D designs into 3D functional hardware. Precision Machining: Utilize a variety of machine tools and hand tools to shape and refine metal components. You will be trained in the specific tolerances required for stop motion performance. Soldering & Joining: Perform silver soldering and other specialized joining techniques to ensure the structural integrity of the puppet skeletons. Repetitive Precision: Execute finely detailed tasks repeatedly over extended periods. The manufacturing of a feature film requires hundreds of identical or similar components; maintaining a high “quality control” standard throughout repetitive cycles is critical. II. Cross-Departmental Collaboration Integration Support: Work closely with the Stop Motion Rigging Team and Puppet Fabrication Team to ensure that the internal armatures are compatible with the external “skin” and the rigorous demands of the Animation department. Feedback Implementation: Assist in the iterative process of refining armatures based on animator feedback to ensure maximum performance and durability on set. Design Accuracy: Ensure all builds meet the strict specifications established by the lead designers to prevent mechanical failure during the months-long animation process. III. Shop Operations & Maintenance Organization: Aid in the maintenance and organization of the armature shop. This includes the management of hardware inventory, tool calibration, and maintaining a clean, safe workspace. Workflow Management: Adhere to strict production deadlines as established by department leadership. You will learn to balance the need for artistic perfection with the realities of a feature film schedule. Required and Preferred Qualifications Minimum Requirements Academic Standing: Candidates must be currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in an accredited college or university, or have graduated within the last 12 months. Field of Study: A strong emphasis in Fine Arts, Film, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or another relevant area of study is required. Technical Aptitude: Demonstrable basic experience with metal fabrication tools and techniques. Industry Knowledge: A foundational understanding of the stop motion fabrication process and how it differs from other forms of animation. Anatomical Knowledge: A basic understanding of human and animal anatomy to better understand the pivot points and range of motion required in character armatures. Preferred Skills & Experience Specialized Fabrication: Prior experience working with ball-and-socket armatures is highly desirable. Digital Literacy: Familiarity with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software for the purpose of viewing or modifying mechanical drawings. Attention to Detail: An obsessive eye for detail and the ability to detect minute discrepancies in mechanical assemblies. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical challenges to non-technical team members. Technical Skills & Tools During the course of this internship, the successful candidate will interact with or be trained on the following: Tools: Lathes, mills, drill presses, silver soldering torches, and various hand-finishing tools. Materials: Stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and various specialized adhesives/fasteners. Concepts: Tensioning, joint friction, tolerances, and the physics of weight distribution in miniature puppets. Job Overview Feature Details Main Focus Character TD (Simulation focus) Studio Location Burbank, California, United States Business Unit Walt Disney Animation Studios (The Secret Lab) Hourly Pay Rate $22.50 per hour Program Duration 11 Weeks (June – August 2026) Application Deadline March 2, 2026 Eligibility 18+ and currently enrolled or recently graduated (within 6 months) Primary Software Autodesk Maya, Marvelous Designer (plus), Linux The Definitive Path to Becoming a Character TD at Disney Animation Walt Disney Animation Studios is inviting the next generation of technical visionaries to apply for our Character TD Summer Internship for 2026. This is more than a seasonal role; it is an immersive entry point into the “The Secret Lab,” where the bridge between artistic performance and technical innovation is built. As a Character TD intern focusing on Character Simulation, you will step into the heart of Burbank to contribute to the legacy that brought Frozen, Encanto, and Moana 2 to life. The role of a Character TD (Technical Director) at Disney is unique. It is a discipline that refuses to choose between the “left brain” and the “right brain.” Whether you are refining the silhouette of a gown in motion or scripting a new way for fur to react to wind, the Character TD ensures that the director’s vision is never limited by the constraints of software. This summer, we are looking for students and recent graduates who are ready to master the craft of character simulation under the mentorship of the world’s leading artists. What is a Character TD at Walt Disney Animation Studios? At Disney, the Character Artist is a versatile powerhouse. While the broader department encompasses Rigging, Technical Animation, Creature Dev, and Character Finaling, this specific internship focuses on the simulation side of the craft. A Character Technical Director specializing in simulation is responsible for the “secondary motion” that gives a character believability. This includes: The Character TD is a highly collaborative role. You will sit at the crossroads of Modeling, Animation, and Lighting, ensuring that the character remains appealing and functional throughout the entire production pipeline. The Internship Experience: A Summer in the Secret Lab Our 11-week Character TD internship (running approximately June–August 2026) is designed to give you a true “hands-on” experience. You aren’t here to watch; you are here to build. Are You the Right Candidate for the Character TD Role? We are looking for individuals who possess a “love for learning” and a genuine passion for the marriage of art and technology. To be a successful Character TD, you should demonstrate excellence in the following areas: Technical Simulation & Rigging The core of the Character TD skillset involves creating simulation rigs. We want to see cloth rigs that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of tailoring and fabric properties. Your work should show how different materials—from heavy wool to light silk—behave under a broad range of motion. Similarly, hair rigs should show an understanding of texture and groom structure. Artistic Appeal and Anatomy A Disney Character TD is an artist first. You must have a deep understanding of human and animal anatomy. Your simulations shouldn’t just be physically “accurate”; they must be “appealing.” This means understanding the principles of animation—squash and stretch, timing, and silhouette—and applying them to how hair and cloth move during a performance. Problem Solving & Tool Development Can you build an artist-friendly interface? A great Character TD doesn’t just use tools; they improve them. We value candidates who show creative problem-solving abilities and an interest in developing tools that make the simulation process more intuitive for others. Technical Skills and Supplemental Talents While we provide extensive training, a foundational knowledge in CG software is expected. A competitive Character TD applicant will ideally have: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Disney The Walt Disney Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The Character TD department thrives on diverse perspectives. We believe that our stories are better when they are told by people from all walks of life. Applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability. Statistically, the animation industry has seen a significant push toward diverse representation. According to industry reports (such as those from Animation Guild and Women in Animation), while certain technical roles have historically seen skewed demographics, modern internship cohorts at major studios like Disney are increasingly reflecting a global population. For instance, recent industry-wide data suggests a steady increase in female and non-binary representation in Technical Director roles, growing by nearly 15% over the last decade. Disney remains a champion of this evolution, ensuring that every Character TD has a seat at the table. Application Requirements & Deadlines To be considered for the 2026 Character TD Summer Internship, you must submit your application by Monday, March 2, 2026. However, within the technical workforce (Animation/Engineering), women historically represent approximately 27-30% of the industry. Sledgehammer Games explicitly encourages women and underrepresented groups to apply to bridge this gap. Racial Diversity: The gaming industry in North America has seen an upward trend in ethnic diversity. For example, recent industry-wide data shows that racial and ethnic minorities now make up over 53% of the broader tech workforce in major firms, with a focus on increasing representation in senior and specialized roles like Technical Animation. The “Toronto Hub”: Toronto has emerged as a global center for game dev, housing over 100+ studios. The Sledgehammer Toronto office specifically serves as a strategic pillar for the global Call of Duty pipeline, partnering with sites in California, Melbourne, and the UK. Our World: The Sledgehammer Culture Working at Sledgehammer Games means joining a network that “entertains the universe.” The studio is responsible for some of the most successful entertainment products in history, including Modern Warfare III, Vanguard, and Advanced Warfare.
