Detailed Responsibilities and Duties as Layout Lead
Departmental Leadership & Mentorship
- Direct & Inspire: Direct, inspire, and mentor all crew members within the CG Layout department, fostering an environment of creative growth and technical excellence.
- Task Delegation: Smartly assign sequence and shot work across the team to best match individual artist strengths, tracking progression against delivery targets.
- Constructive Feedback: Provide consistent, professional, and constructive feedback to artists, elevating their cinematography skills and maintaining studio standards.
Creative Cinematography & Continuity
- Aesthetic Supervision: Oversee crucial cinematic elements including character blocking, environment set dressing, camera framing, and lens movement.
- Storytelling Focus: Maintain a profound sense of camera composition, animation timing, and narrative pacing across all sequences.
- Supervisor Collaboration: Work hand-in-hand with the Layout Supervisor to ensure the strict composition and cinematic benchmarks of the show are honored throughout the layout process.
- Visual Flow: Take direct ownership of visual and narrative continuity, guaranteeing smooth, logical cuts within and between shots.
Pipeline, Workflow & Cross-Department Collaboration
- Workflow Integration: Collaborate closely with the CG Supervisor to test creative and technical workflows, maximizing department efficiency and evolving the layout pipeline.
- Asset Management: Coordinate with asset and modeling departments to ensure 3D environments and character models are utilized as intended, providing clear technical feedback when adjustments are required.
- Pipeline Feedback: Operate efficiently within pipeline constraints, actively pinpointing workflow bottlenecks and proposing structural solutions to technical leads.
- Clear Communication: Maintain clear, transparent communication while working to complex verbal or visual briefs, proactively flagging technical or schedule issues before they impact production.
Experience and Qualifications for Layout Lead
Flying Bark Productions is seeking a seasoned artist with a director’s eye for staging, lens selection, and physical camera mechanics.
Technical & Artistic Requirements:
- Lead Experience: Previous Layout Lead experience on high-end previsualization or animated long-form projects is highly preferred.
- Senior Alternative: We will also consider an exceptionally strong Senior Layout Artist with a proven track record of leading complex sequences and mentoring junior artists in a studio environment.
- Specialized Demo Reel: A comprehensive portfolio or showreel focused explicitly on high-quality 3D layout and previs work.
- Cinematic Mastery: An advanced, highly refined understanding of composition, cinematic camera movement, animation timing, and narrative staging.
- Technical Lens Knowledge: Deep knowledge of layout workflows, real-world live-action and CG camera lens properties, camera rigs, aspect ratios, and standard cinematography conventions.
- Passionate Horizon: A genuine enthusiasm and ongoing passion for animation, cameras, film logic, and visual storytelling.
Leadership & Soft Skills:
