Job Summary

The Production Designer develops and creates the designs, concepts, and style of a project. They are responsible for establishing the quality bar required for production, while working within the schedule and budget set down by the production team. They will also lead the team of Visual Development Artists and Designers, with a focus on completing a fully animated feature film in a fast-paced creative environment and work hand in hand with the Director and Art Director.

Responsibilities

  • Bring a clear passion for animation to all design tasks and initiatives.
  • Develop the design concept, style, and quality bar required for the production, taking into account the advantages and restrictions of 3D animation in a Production pipeline, and the production schedule and budget.
  • Ensure creative ideas and suggestions regarding design and styles being conceived on the production, whether it be within the design, modeling, animation, or lighting departments, are properly heard and evaluated to ensure the highest quality production possible.
  • Oversee all designers and conceptual staff within the production’s art department, on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that the goals of the production are being met.
  • Positive, team player who works well with production crew members, including Directors, Production Management, the VFX Supervisor and other artists across disciplines.
  • Ability to quickly adapt designs to ever evolving story and development
  • Ability to give consistent concise notes to artists on rough sketches, clean line art including set designs, blueprints, orthographics, schematic and plan views as needed.
  • Meet and communicate with the modeling and other departments to ensure design meets the requirements of the animation and modeling schedules.
  • Actively participate in technical and artistic problem solving.
  • Take direction well and able to integrate feedback from the Director efficiently and effectively.
  • Accountable for meeting productivity expectations and deadlines.
  • Use studio’s artwork management, web-based tool for assignments and review process.
  • Ability to integrate 3D previs and layout within art/design workflow.
  • Provide creative direction, supervise, train and mentor staff.

Qualifications

  • MS/BA/BFA Degree in Fine Arts or Commercial Arts Field. (Asset, not necessarily required.)
  • Experience as an accomplished Art Director or Production Designer on a 3D animated production.
  • Minimum 5 years of designer experience.
  • Strong understanding of design and the issues inherent in creating characters, sets, props, vehicles, lighting setups, and render styles for a 3D CGI production; experience working with a Virtual Production pipeline considered an asset
  • 3-D and 2-D character modeling and creature design experience, an asset.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Self-managing — organized with solid time management skills. Must be able to identify and meet goals.
  • Proven abilities in conceptualizing, organizing, and managing projects from concept to completion.
  • Advanced understanding of fundamental design skills including composition, perspective, form and use of detail.
  • Strong knowledge of surface texture, anatomy, and architecture.
  • Ability to create a positive, productive, and exciting work environment through his/her own ability to inspire others.
