Detailed Job Description: Hard Surface Modeller
Your Mission
As a Hard Surface Modeller at Wētā FX, you are a master of structure and form. You will be responsible for the creation of high-fidelity digital assets including vehicles, architecture, props, and armour. You won’t just be making “models”—you will be building the physical reality of the films we create.
Wētā FX jobs are defined by technical stewardship. You must ensure that your models are “pipeline-perfect” for downstream departments such as Rigging, FX, Layout, and Lookdev. You will translate concepts from 2D reference, previs, photogrammetry, and scan data into production-ready 3D assets.
Primary Responsibilities
Asset Creation: Build complex, photorealistic hard surface models ranging from hero vehicles to massive environmental structures.
Technical Excellence: Generate clean, efficient topology and optimized UV layouts that facilitate high-end texturing and look development.
Pipeline Integration: Hand off assets that meet the strict technical requirements for rigging (clean hierarchies, proper naming conventions) and FX (watertight meshes for destruction/simulation).
Reference Interpretation: Work closely with the Art Department and VFX Supervisors to match supplied references with extreme precision.
Problem Solving: Navigate complex technical challenges, such as integrating scan data or optimizing massive datasets for our proprietary rendering engines.
Collaboration: Participate in dailies and reviews, offering and receiving constructive feedback to maintain the high standard expected of Wētā FX jobs.
Candidate Requirements
The “Must-Haves”
The Reel: An impressive portfolio showcasing a diverse range of hard surface work. We look for “the big and the small”—from massive spaceships to the fine mechanical details of a wristwatch.
Maya Mastery: Due to our deeply integrated pipeline, expert-level knowledge of Autodesk Maya is non-negotiable for anyone applying to Wētā FX jobs in the modelling department.
Digital Sculpting: Proficiency in Z-Brush or Mudbox for adding high-frequency detail and surface wear.
OS Fluency: Comfortable working within a Linux desktop environment and using terminal/system commands for daily tasks.
Artistic Eye: A deep understanding of mechanical design, industrial design, and how objects are constructed in the real world to ensure “functional” realism.
The “Nice-to-Haves” (Additional Beneficial Experience)
Scripting: Proficiency in Python or MEL to automate repetitive tasks or build custom modelling tools.
Multi-Disciplinary Skills: Experience in organic modelling (characters/creatures) or large-scale environment building.
Technical Tools: Familiarity with Houdini (for procedural modelling), Blender, or Reality Capture (for photogrammetry workflows).

Deep Dive: The Technical Expectations of Wētā FX Jobs
Working at Wētā FX requires more than just artistic talent; it requires a deep understanding of the VFX Pipeline. Hard Surface Modellers are the foundation of the asset creation process. If a model has poor topology or messy UVs, it creates a “snowball effect” of issues for the rest of the studio.
Topology and Mesh Flow
For Wētā FX jobs, “clean topology” isn’t just a buzzword. It means:
Sub-D (Subdivision) friendliness to ensure the mesh holds its shape under extreme close-ups.
Logical edge loops that allow for realistic mechanical deformation during rigging.
Avoiding N-gons and maintaining a predominantly quad-based workflow.
UV Mapping and UDIMs
Efficiency is key. Our modellers must be experts at managing UDIM workflows, ensuring that texel density is consistent across massive assets. You will be expected to organize UV shells in a way that makes sense for the Lookdev and Texture departments, allowing them to apply complex procedural and hand-painted materials without distortion.
The Linux Advantage
Most high-end VFX studios, including Wētā, operate on Linux. Proficiency in the command line allows our artists to navigate our file systems faster, run batch scripts, and troubleshoot technical issues without needing constant IT support. If you are applying for Wētā FX jobs, familiarizing yourself with basic Bash commands will give you a significant advantage.
