Company Overview

Since its inception, Brown Bag Films has established itself as one of the most creatively driven studios in the industry. With multiple Emmy® and Academy Award® nominations, our work speaks for itself. We prioritize a culture of inclusivity, artistic growth, and technical innovation. As a Senior Texturing Artist at our Dublin Studio, you will be part of a team that values your creative input and provides the tools necessary to produce world-class animation.

Role Overview

The Senior Texturing Artist is a cornerstone of the Look Development phase. Your primary objective is to create high-quality textures and shaders that fulfill the artistic and narrative goals set by the Art Director. You will navigate the intersection of art and technology, adhering to strict technical specifications and project constraints while pushing the boundaries of visual excellence.

Beyond asset creation, you will play a pivotal role in department growth—maintaining best practices, developing documentation, and mentoring junior team members to ensure the collective output of the studio remains industry-leading.

Key Responsibilities

Asset Creation & Look Development

  • Advanced Surfacing: Create complex textures and shaders for characters, props, and environments using a professional toolset including Unreal Engine, Maya, and Substance Painter.

  • Visual Interpretation: Translate the Art Director’s visual direction into technical reality, ensuring every asset supports the project’s narrative goals.

  • Pipeline Integration: Collaborate closely with Lighting and Compositing teams to ensure shaders are optimized for final look requirements and render efficiency.

  • Technical Approvals: Perform rigorous technical reviews on assets produced both internally and by external vendors to ensure consistency and quality.

Workflow & Technical Leadership

  • Process Optimization: Develop and maintain efficient surfacing workflows, shader libraries, and comprehensive documentation to streamline production.

  • Troubleshooting: Act as a high-level problem solver for artistic and technical issues related to surfacing and rendering performance.

  • Strategic Collaboration: Work with technical teams to ensure rendering performance is optimized without sacrificing visual quality.

  • Project Scoping: Liaise with Production to help scope tasks, schedule resources, and manage project budgets effectively.

Mentorship & Quality Control

  • Team Development: Provide consistent mentorship and constructive feedback to junior artists, fostering a culture of continuous learning.

  • Dailies & Reviews: Participate in animatic reviews, early visual development, and daily critique sessions to elevate the work of the wider team, including overseas partners.

  • Time Management: Monitor and log task duration diligently, escalating potential bottlenecks to Production promptly.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional Track Record: Proven experience in texturing for high-end animation, VFX, or games.

  • Engine Expertise: Mandatory experience working within Unreal Engine. You should be comfortable navigating its real-time rendering capabilities.

  • Look Dev Mastery: Demonstrated experience in look development and the creation of comprehensive shader libraries.

  • Industry Knowledge: A thorough understanding of current industry tools, workflows, and surfacing best practices.

  • Legal Requirement: Candidates must possess the right to work in Ireland for the duration of the 12-month contract.

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Artistic Excellence: Advanced texture painting and shading skills with a keen eye for detail, color, and material properties.

  • Shader Engineering: Deep experience with layered shaders in both Unreal Engine and Maya.

  • Efficiency Strategies: Strong ability to implement optimization and reuse strategies to maintain performance across large-scale productions.

  • Collaborative Communication: Ability to interpret visual direction and communicate technical needs clearly to Art Directors, CG Supervisors, and external vendors.

Leadership & Professionalism Expectations

As a Senior member of the CG department, you are expected to:

  • Stay current on emerging tools and industry trends, bringing fresh innovation to the studio.

  • Lead by example in terms of organization, documentation, and technical discipline.

  • Be a proactive voice in early visual development, helping to define the look of a show before it hits full production.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive Salary: A salary range of €43,000 to €55,000, reflecting the seniority and specialized nature of the role.

  • Hybrid Working Model: A flexible arrangement combining the focus of home-based work with two days of collaborative studio time in Dublin.
