  • Primary Toolset: Foundry Nuke

BlueBolt is a multi-award-winning visual effects studio that has spent the last sixteen years defining the aesthetic of modern cinema and television. From the legendary landscapes of Game of Thrones and the gritty atmosphere of Peaky Blinders to the epic scale of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and the visceral action of The Northman, our team consistently delivers world-class imagery.

BlueBol is a collaborative, happy team based in the heart of London, and we are currently looking for a motivated Roto/Prep Artist to join us for an exciting slate of upcoming projects

The Roto/Prep Artist is the foundation of the compositing pipeline. This role is essential for preparing plates and ensuring that our Compositors have the cleanest, most accurate assets possible to create seamless visual effects.

The Role: Impact and Vision

At BlueBolt, we believe that the highest quality visual effects start with meticulous preparation. As a Roto/Prep Artist, you are responsible for the vital first steps of the compositing process. Your work allows our award-winning team to integrate CG elements, digital matte paintings, and complex effects into live-action plates with total invisibility.

This role requires more than just technical precision; it requires an artistic eye. You must understand the nuances of light, edge quality, and motion blur to ensure that your rotoscoping and plate preparation support the final artistic vision of the Director and VFX Supervisor. Whether you are removing complex rigs from a period drama like Peaky Blinders or rotoscoping a character for a high-octane feature film, your attention to detail is what makes the impossible look real.

II. Detailed Responsibilities at BlueBolt

1. Technical Rotoscoping and Prep

  • Plate Preparation: Execute high-quality rotoscoping and digital “prep” work (clean plate generation, rig removal, and paint fixes) using Nuke.

  • Edge Fidelity: Ensure that all roto shapes maintain consistent edge quality, accurately capturing motion blur and transparency to aid the final composite.

  • Cleanup and Reconstruction: Use paint and patch techniques to remove tracking markers, microphones, safety rigs, and other unwanted elements from live-action plates.

2. Collaborative Integration

  • Direct Reporting: Regularly report to the VFX Supervisor or Lead Compositor regarding shot progress and technical challenges.

  • Feedback Loops: Actively take direction and constructive feedback from Compositors and Supervisors to refine shot quality.

  • Pipeline Communication: Be a team-oriented communicator who can clearly explain technical issues and troubleshoot logically within the Nuke environment.

3. Quality Control and Efficiency

  • Eye for Detail: Maintain a rigorous standard of quality control, ensuring that all work is delivered free of “chatter,” artifacts, or edge inconsistencies.

  • Brief Execution: Work effectively to a creative brief, ensuring that the work meets the aesthetic requirements of the project while respecting production deadlines.

  • Resourcefulness: Efficiently manage your time and prioritize tasks based on project urgency and the needs of the wider compositing team.

III. Requirements and Skills

The ideal candidate at BlueBolt is someone who combines technical proficiency with a genuine passion for the craft of filmmaking.

Core Technical Skills

  • Software Proficiency: A good working knowledge of Foundry Nuke is mandatory for this role.

  • Industry Experience: Previous experience working within a VFX facility is preferred, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked on feature film projects.

  • Artistic Foundation: A strong understanding of the core principles of composition and colour is essential for high-quality prep and paint work.

Professional Competencies

  • Detailed Observation: A strong eye for detail to catch minor inconsistencies that could break the illusion of a VFX shot.

  • Motivation: A self-motivated individual who is eager to learn and grow within a fast-paced, award-winning studio environment.

  • Logical Troubleshooting: The ability to look at a complex plate and logically determine the most efficient way to achieve a clean result.
