Role Overview

As a Lead Lighting Artist, you’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality lighting that enhances both playable levels and cinematics, staying true to the Art Director’s vision. You’ll also lead and mentor a talented lighting team, ensuring artistic excellence, technical performance, and efficient collaboration across departments.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Direction

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of Lighting Artists to achieve the best creative and professional outcomes.

  • Maintain visual direction and set lighting quality standards.

  • Support narrative storytelling through effective use of light, mood, and color.

  • Establish workflows, pipelines, and review processes.

Production & Quality

  • Light scenes, levels, and cinematics based on concept art and references.

  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality lighting while balancing performance budgets.

  • Supervise bug fixes, R&D case studies, and knowledge base documentation.

  • Work closely with production on task assignments and schedules.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with Tech Art, VFX, Level Design, and Engineering teams to optimize lighting solutions.

  • Drive R&D initiatives to explore new techniques and improve workflows.

  • Communicate effectively across departments and with project stakeholders.

  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and performance reviews.

Artistic & Technical Excellence

  • Profile and optimize lighting setups for characters, environments, and cinematics.

  • Stay current with industry trends in lighting for games and film.

  • Develop complete lighting systems using Unreal Engine Blueprints and other tools.

  • Handle special-case lighting setups with creative problem-solving.


Qualifications

  • Strong portfolio showcasing world-class AAA lighting work.

  • 7+ years in console/PC game development, including 5+ years with Unreal Engine.

  • Previous leadership/mentorship experience in lighting roles.

  • Expertise in real-time lighting, PBR workflows, and optimization for current-gen consoles.

  • Proficiency with Maya, Max, ZBrush, Photoshop (or equivalents).

  • Understanding of photography fundamentals (EV, ISO, shutter speed, composition).

  • Ability to create lighting-related assets (textures, HDR maps, IES profiles, materials, scripts).

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in English.

  • Self-motivated with proven ability to adapt and innovate.
