Core Responsibilities as Lighting Artist
1. Hero Shot Execution & Sequence Benchmarking
You will be responsible for the “look” of key shots. By establishing the lighting design for a lead shot in a sequence, you create the template that other artists will follow. Your goal is to achieve a noise-free, production-ready render that matches the creative direction of the VFX Supervisor while maintaining flawless continuity across the entire sequence.
2. Technical Troubleshooting & Scene Refinement
VFX production is rarely without hurdles. You will serve as the first line of defense for technical scene issues. Whether it is debugging render artifacts, fixing broken inputs, or resolving shader inconsistencies, your technical confidence in Houdini and Arnold allows the team to maintain momentum. You will ensure all lighting setups are clean, versioned, and easily usable by others.
3. Mentorship and Departmental Growth
Leadership at One of Us is collaborative. You will mentor mid-level and junior artists, helping them elevate their artistic output and technical efficiency. This involves performing internal reviews, providing constructive feedback, and sharing your knowledge of physical light behavior and shading to help others grow.
4. Optimization & Render Efficiency
High-end VFX requires massive computing power. You will identify opportunities for render savings by optimizing sampling, managing memory usage, and streamlining workflows. Your ability to deliver visually stunning results that are also “computationally lean” is vital for meeting tight production deadlines.
5. Pipeline Evolution (USD/LOPs)
The industry is moving toward a USD (Universal Scene Description) future. You will play an active role in our transition to and utilization of LOPs (Lighting Operators) within Houdini. If you have experience with Python or HScript, you will have the opportunity to contribute to internal lighting tools and automation templates that improve the department’s overall scalability.
Requirements & Technical Proficiency
Technical Mastery
- Houdini Expert: Deep knowledge of Houdini lighting workflows (SOPs and especially LOPs/Solaris).
- Rendering Engines: Expert proficiency in Arnold, with a strong interest or experience in Karma.
- Compositing Integration: A thorough understanding of how lighting interacts with the compositing stage. You should be expert in AOV planning and Deep Image compositing workflows in Nuke.
- Physics of Light: A sophisticated understanding of the physical properties of light, including color temperature, decay, and the interaction of light with various material surfaces (SSS, Translucency, etc.).
- Pipeline Logic: Comfortable working in a highly structured, version-controlled environment.
Professional Experience
- VFX Veteran: 5–7 years of experience working on high-end VFX for feature films or premium episodic content.
- On-Set Data: Ability to work with HDRIs, chrome/gray ball reference, and set photography to accurately recreate physical lighting conditions.
- Problem-Solving: A proactive mindset. You don’t just find problems; you bring solutions to the table.
Soft Skills & Studio Culture
One of Us is built on a foundation of mutual respect. We look for artists who are:
- Excellent Communicators: You share information clearly, flag blockers early, and actively listen to the needs of other departments like Compositing and FX.
- Time-Managed Professionals: You can prioritize high-impact tasks, meet deadlines, and keep meetings concise and productive.
- Adaptable & Positive: Production requirements can shift quickly. We value artists who remain focused and maintain a positive attitude during the iterative process.
- Driven: You have a natural desire to “make things better,” whether that is a single pixel in a shot or a global workflow for the studio.
