As a Mid-Level Compositor at BlueBolt, you aren’t just a “cog in the machine.” You are a critical creative contributor responsible for the final “marriage” of all visual elements. Your work will be seen by millions, appearing in prestige productions that demand the highest level of photorealistic integration.

The BlueBolt Culture: Why Work With Us?

BlueBolt is widely recognized not just for our trophy cabinet—which includes BAFTA and Emmy nominations—but for our “happy and collaborative” atmosphere. We believe that great art comes from a healthy environment.

We specialize in high-end compositing, computer graphics (CG), and digital matte painting (DMP). Our projects range from gritty period dramas like Peaky Blinders to massive historical epics like Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. If you are an artist who values subtlety, realism, and invisible effects, BlueBolt is your spiritual home.

Detailed Candidate Profile

BlueBolt is seeking artists who have moved past the junior phase and are now confident in handling complex shots with minimal supervision.

1. Technical Foundations

  • The Nuke Ecosystem: You must have a deep, functional understanding of Nuke. We aren’t just looking for “button pushers”; we want artists who understand the math behind the nodes, from colorspace management (ACES/OCIO) to advanced channel usage.

  • Roto & Prep Background: Every great compositor starts with a foundation in “prep.” You should have a proven track record in high-end rotoscoping, plate cleaning, and rig removal. Even though you are moving into more complex compositing, that “clean” sensibility must remain in your work.

  • CG Integration: You must demonstrate a high level of skill in integrating multi-pass CG (Beauty, AO, Shadow, Position, Normals) into live-action plates. Understanding how light interacts with surfaces in the real world is essential.

2. Artistic Sensibility

  • Photorealism: You have a “critical eye” for black levels, grain matching, lens distortion, and atmospheric depth.

  • The “Brief” Execution: You can take a creative brief from a Lead or Supervisor and translate it into a visual reality. You know how to ask the right questions early to avoid unnecessary revisions.

  • Problem Solving: When a key doesn’t work or a tracker slips, you don’t panic. You troubleshoot logically, testing different approaches until you find the most efficient path to “final.”

Core Responsibilities

Shot Ownership & Production

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Report directly to the VFX Supervisor or Lead Compositor, ensuring your shots align with the overall creative vision of the sequence.
  • Seamlessly blend separate live-action elements (plates) with computer-generated (CG) assets.
  • Manage your own time effectively, ensuring that shots move through the pipeline on schedule without sacrificing quality.
  • Proactively communicate with the CG and DMP departments if you need specific passes or matte adjustments to make a shot work.

Team Collaboration

BlueBolt is a team-oriented studio. You will be expected to:

  • Participate in “Dailies” with a constructive attitude, taking feedback gracefully and applying it quickly.
  • Share knowledge with fellow compositors. If you find a better way to solve a specific technical hurdle, we encourage you to share that “Nuke tip” with the team.
  • Remain motivated and focused, even when working under the pressure of tight delivery windows.

Hybrid Work Policy

We understand the modern landscape of work. This role is Partially Remote, allowing for a balance between working from our vibrant London studio and the comfort of your home office. However, due to the collaborative nature of Lead-Artist mentorship, being available for in-studio days in London is a requirement.

Application Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following non-negotiable criteria:

  1. Legal Right to Work: All applicants must be current residents of the United Kingdom and possess the legal right to work here. (BlueBolt cannot provide visa sponsorship for mid-level roles at this time).
  2. Facility Experience: You must have “Significant Experience” working within a recognized VFX facility. Freelance or student work is great, but we need to see that you understand the professional studio pipeline.
  3. The Showreel: Your reel should clearly showcase your “before and after” breakdowns. We want to see the raw plate, the elements you added, and the final result.

Final Word

If you are a Mid-Level Compositor who is tired of being “just a number” at a massive facility and wants to work on award-winning projects in a studio that feels like a community, BlueBolt is the place for you. We look forward to seeing your work and hearing your story.
